Aggression is an inherited trait in many breeds of dogs, including pitbulls, staffs, tosas, dogos, etc. This does not mean that the dog cannot be a lovable trusting pet. Aggression can usually be controlled with proper training and handling. A good responsible breeder of these breeds carefully screens buyers of their dogs. They also carefully breed their dogs and their pups are properly socialized. The problem lies with backyard breeders that breed just for the money and for fighting. They do not care about proper training unless it pertains to fighting or guarding. The meaner the better. It is true that there are vicious individuals in all breeds. I knew of a vicious Saint Bernard and a Golden Retriever. Two breeds known to be great family dogs. I have known many pits and staffs. Most were loyal to their familes and would protect them but they were friendly dogs. They knew who was good and who was bad. If they bit you, you deserved it. Some breeds are aggressive towards other dogs. This is bred into them. But they should not be aggressive towards people. AKC even states in some breed descriptions that it is ok for the dog to be aggressive towards other dogs but not to the handler or the judge. It also must be easily handled by the handler. Breeds such as the Bouvier have to pass an aggression test to complete their championship. They must show aggression to a stranger and not back down, no matter what. But the dog must also obey the handler and stop when told. It is a shame to take a loyal friendly family pet away from it's loving family. I'm sure those same people wouldn't like their dog taken from them.
