I think all of this really comes down to the individual cam owner preferences. I have no doubt some people only want a call once the feet are coming out! And, power to them! =) To each their own. And, each owner knows their mare best - so they know what their mare needs and doesn't need.
Me, I want to know about anything odd ASAP, and if that means I get calls over nothing, I just don't care! I have mostly very young mares (first or second foals) or quite old mares, so I worry incessantly about them all. And, Friesians have a couple of major but easily corrected problems when foaling, so I'd rather be woken up for a false alarm 10 times per night than miss anything.
I think each cam owner just needs to be very explicit on their cam page as to precisely what point they want a call at.
Anyways, that's my 2 cents =) Allison @ Mythic Friesians

Whew...! I didn't realize there was such a problem out here in "marestare land" We have our own barn cameras broadcasting & have received several calls when the mares are close to foaling, but no one that has called has been rude, only trying to be helpful. We appreciate them watching our mares. Sounds like the offensive behavior may be traced back to a few offenders & maybe those offenders can be traced and banned?

Heather, you do what you have to do-any one of us will understand, i think foaling time is like a full moon-all the weirdo spammers come out and its a shame they ruin it for newbies to mare watching especiall for the kids. i have a few friends that cam and their boards are getting it also, one gal made it to where she has to read every post before she allows it to be postd but your so huge it would be impossible,

Heather, great posting! I only watch and only 1 time did i called and owner she was away. when I called her she ask me what i was seeing and she was trying to get back to barn. I talk to her till foal was out and that momma & foal seem to be doing great the barn owner thank me very much for telling her what i was watching. I only called that owner because I knew they were away. And I love watching the foals be born. I only say congrats and way to go and cheer them on. Thanks All Barn owner for allowing us to watch. I sure hope all cams don't go private. as this is my enjoyment. But I will understand if they have to. ;D

Well, here is just another example... My poor husband... He got called in to work early yesterday so worked from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. HIS phone, not mine, rings at about 3:30 AM. He didn't recognize the #, but answered it anyway. He says (half asleep) "Hello?"Female on the other end says, "Do you know you have colts in the stalls?"What the ? Jason says, "Ummm..., yes."Female says, "oh, ok.". And hangs up! Now .... can you all realize the importance of only calling cam owners when you think it is AN EMERGENCY!!!?!!!Poor Jas... That is why I list my number as the FIRST number to call. Sometimes he really curses having these cams!

Poor Jas and Cindy ! i feel for some cam owners and the things they tolerate from some people! as if two colts just snuck in there unknowingly!!

It's the best and the worst of the Internet, isn't it? I had to physically restrain a friend of mine when she for the first time, ever, saw a foal being born, and she wanted to call the owners to yell at them!!! It's hard, but when one invites the world in..... good luck!

Jason says, "Ummm..., yes."Female says, "oh, ok.". And hangs up! Almost the exact same thing happened to us the other night. After spending 45 minutes trying to get Daphne's colt out and into the world and finally succeeding (Maiden mare, she was tight, he had hoof over head), a young thing called my cell phone as we were all standing outside the stall letting momma and baby bond and waiting to hear back from our veterinarian. "Hello", says I. "Did you know your mare foaled? She has a baby standing in there." "You're kidding!", I said. (hee hee) "No", she said, "You really need to look at your stall." "Didn't you see us in there for the last 45 minutes trying to get the foal out of the mare?", I asked. "No", she says, "I just turned the camera on and saw the baby." "Hmm.. Did you bother to check our message board or Mare Stare's board before calling?" "No..." she says. "Did you bother checking to see if there was a high alert out for this mare?" "Well, no", murmers the caller. "Thank you for calling, Dear. Next time, please check our message board. I'm sure there are a bunch of posts on there by now congratulating us for that live baby you see standing there. Goodnight." CLICK! While I appreciate the good intentions of her call, applying a little common sense before calling would be appreciated. Three message boards (that I know of) were carrying blow-by-blow coverage of this foaling. Ours, Mare Stare and Little Beginnings. Our message board link is right there on our cam page twice. Once in the scrolling message and then again right under the scrolling message. It wouldn't have taken 30 seconds to check to see if anything was on our board. I hope her calling wasn't some intentional goofing around and messing with the barn owner thing. I'd hate to think that someone has decided to make calling our emergency numbers a game to play when they have nothing better to do. Or maybe it's just a cry for attention??

have been reading all the posts on this subject and all the cam owners have my sympathy. I agree with Franny and hope this is not someones new idea of a game or a way to discredit marestare with its cam owners. Maybe the names of these people need to be listed on the board for everyone to see. Just my 2 cents worth. I thank all cam owners for allowing me to join them in their barns, you are all truly wonderful people

Hmmph! Had a post all done, and it disappeared! Sorry, Franny, Cindy, and Jason, that you got those dumb-bunny calls. Almost sounds like a certain L--a, who was very annoying on some MBs last year, and still posts at Clovermini sometimes. Maybe those of you with caller ID could give the #s to Heather, and see if it's the same person who's doing this.

I was very sorry to read about the abuse some of the owners have taken from people harassing the horse owners at a time they are already under great stress. The post above from Clevengerpaints said it well, if you can't say anything good, say nothing. I started watching the cams after reading a story about how people watching a cam saw an owner in trouble when a horse rolled on her...that's what this should be about, helping not hurting.

I so appreciate being allowed into the barns to watch the mares and their babies. I have noticed posts about mare owners not doing anything when their mares are in trouble. I can guarantee you the vet has been called and there is nothing that can be done until the vet gets there. I have llamas and know that there could be a situation that I wouldn't know how to handle so I would wait until my vet arrived. I could cause more damage to mom and baby if I interfered and not knowing what I was doing. Sometimes the owner may not turn off the cam when they have a difficult delivery. The last thing on their minds is the cam or they may not have an extra hand to turn it off. Mom and baby comes first. If you don't like what you see, turn off the cam. I know one cam owner that got a call from an irate mother for not turning their cam off during a difficult delivery. Her kid didn't have to see that. She could have turned the cam off and she should have been monitoring her young child. I agree with checking with the message boards. Owners are usually close by when their mare is in labor. And they usually have someone they call who then passes on the updates. Please have some respect for these wonderful mare owners who let us into their barns and lives. I'd really hate to lose such a special privilege.
