Shina is Shazmara's first foal. When Shina was weaned, she ran through a barbed wire fence and got pretty cut up. I have no idea if this has anything to do with their intense dislike for each other, but it is definitely mutual. I know that Shina stayed with her breeder until I purchased her about 3 years ago, but Shazmara has had several homes in the interim. When I first got Shina and brought her home, they seemed fine over the fence, but once Shina was turned out on pasture with Shaz, they kept getting into kicking matches with each other and Shina actually sliced Shaz's vulva badly enough that it had to be stitched. We have had them seperated ever since then. Shina is a very strong-willed and opinionated mare, while the only things Shaz reacts strongly to is being a mother and her dislike of her first daughter. <shrug> I THINK Shina would like to have Tabithe inside with her, but Tab is being difficult again and won't let me catch her, so unfortunately she will have to stay out. This storm is supposed to pass through relatively quick, so it should be over soon and I am pretty sure Shina will settle by then. She is normally an easily-handled mare and quite safe to be around, but when ANY horse gets THAT worked up, it takes a long time for the adrenalin to get out of their system.

Aww that's so sad that Shina and Shaz dislike eachother so much. Ouch poor Shaz and her painful injury. I never knew that horse mothers and daughters could grow up despising eachother so much.

Steph ... Thank you for filling us in. I know you're strong & nimble but when I seen you go in with Shina & she moved you around I thought OMG who do I call to help you. Its not like I'm around the corner (wish I was), but you handled yourself & her so well as usual.

Well, last year she foaled at 331 days and as of TODAY she is 330 days... LOL She could go any time now, but I still think that we have a few days.

Wow. I know you have a lot of education in breeding mares, but do you also have a degree in horse psychology? You must to be able to deal so successfully with so many strong willed females.
I can't imagine how much time you must spend studying each horse to learn about their likes and dislikes. You know so much about each horses personality that you know how they'll react to almost everything. You really are Wonder Woman!

I saw her pacing some earlier, not sure when it was, but had no idea she'd been so upset until I finally got to catch up on the thread just now. Whoa! Interesting history she and her mom have. It strikes me as funny that Shaz feels strongly only about being a mother and hating her first daughter. Oh the irony! I know of some human mothers that are like that though. Shina is totally calm now. You'd never know she was going to tear the barn down earlier.

I still can't get over the fact that Shaz and Shina despise eachother so much! This is some Jerry Springer type stuff! LOL. I'm such a softee at heart that it kind of makes me sad they don't get along.

It makes me sad too Allison. I always want everyone to get along all the time. I'm really sad about Shaz sort of semi-stealing Ceasar from Skye and causing him to split his affections between her and his mom, even if Steph says they all seem to be ok with it. Elements is such the soap opera barn!!

Skye doesn't really mind as it gives her help keeping him safe! Shaz is a wonderful mom though and next year she will have her OWN foal. Her foals that she had AFTER Shina all have normal relationships with her. She has another daughter here who belongs to dbranch (who has yet ANOTHER daughter of Shaz at their ranch). Shaz gets on fine with them.... Shina started acting up again last night when the herd came thundering up the driveway, but settled down again as soon as they wandered off. lol

I saw her get agitated but calm again right after. I'd been wondering what happened.
