Foaling season is over for me and I have had my cam on pasture but the horses are rarely in view to be able to watch my colt RaffDakk so I decided to put cam on my 2 hens that are setting on eggs I bought off of Ebay. I have had a chicken snake come in and eat some of the eggs so I moved these hens up to my barn and they are now stalled and hopefully safe and the remaining eggs will hatch. These are featherfooted mixed bantam hens and one hen is setting on 2 white peamale thingy and 1 cameo peamale thingy eggs and the other hen is setting on 5 blue mille fluer bantam eggs , these eggs are due to hatch July 2nd to the 5th sometime. It takes 21 days for the chicken eggs and 28 for the peakocks to hatch I made sure I set them so that they will all hatch close to each other. I have had good luck in the past hatching eggs bought off of ebay and hopefully this time will have a good hatch rate also in spite of the snake feasting on 6 of my mille fluer eggs. I have special eggs set for mr snake tonight and hopefully he will come to his last meal at the hen house. Cam Link www.marestare.com/morability.php

I hope we don't see a snake either, my barn is a pretty good distance away from where the hen house is so hopefully he won't slither his way up to horse barn to finish off the eggs . I have not let any hens set on eggs for about a year since I had so many already so I was not aware mr snake was making his way through hen house at night looking for eggs and I have not lost any chickens in a long time so when the eggs started disappearing without a trace I know it has to be a chicken snake crawling under the hens and swallowing the eggs 2 at a time every couple of days, I had a old man tell me how to rid myself of this problem so I am testing it out tonight and see if it works.

Mothballs do work good my mom uses them around her place but I can not use them around the chickens because they will eat them. Those mouse sticky pads can also be used to catch a snake but I can not use those either cause the chickens will get into them. I know snakes have a good purpose on earth but the only good ones around my place are dead ones.

I've never watched eggs before - now I KNOW I'm addicted. This will be a new experience and should be fun...until I see Mr. Snake...

How did I miss this Chickam? I will be watching now and then. I just had a clutch of banty chicks hatch about a month ago. Now I have two more hens setting on huge clutches of eggs, 20 or more at least! BUT I have always wanted to order eggs off Ebay and have always been afraid they would not be viable by the time they were shipped here! Did these hens already have eggs of their own they were sitting on? If our hens already have a nest with eggs in it and start clucking then we can sneak orphaned eggs in under them. But, if they haven't started clucking and we try it, they will abandon the whole nest! Pleae PM me with the snake remedy! I too have a snake issue! And a possum issue and a raccoon issue and a stray cat issue and a coyote issue! It seems EVERYTHING eats chicken!
