I take it that Cordero is a real live horse? Are you sure that offering one of your "kids" as a prize is a good idea??? Legally and Morally??? Besides, most countries have a law that says you cant offer animals as prizes, and by charging $10 "entry fee" that is what you are doing.

I think it's more of an adoption type thing. I'm sure the new home and owner would be checked out thoroughly before anything was official.

I agree that this is an adoption type deal, based on the story that is written by the prospective winner. It won't be a random drawing by a ticket or coupon. It will be based on other means. It would be the same as screening someone that comes to your farm, except you don't get to meet them face to face.
Amanda is selective about where her horses go and I'm sure that this adoption is no different.
We do thank you for your concerns though. It's true that raffling off an animal is illegal in some areas, but I don't consider this to be a raffle and there is no money involved.

Zalea says "The jist is this.................
Entry fee is $10."
Heather says "I don't consider this to be a raffle and there is no money involved."
Sorry but by charging an entry fee it is a raffle.

It is not a RAFFLE, it is a CONTEST. A RAFFLE is something that is won by a drawing and is completely by blind chance. This is a CONTEST that will be won by careful consideration and judging of the essays written by the entrants.
It's kind of like when people are 'giving' away a bed-and- breakfast, and you have to write an essay and send in $100. The people pick a winner based on the essays, not a random drawing, and keep the money from all the entrants. (in these cases, it's usually hundreds of thousands of dollars).

My apologies - you are right, there is an entrance fee. But each person is being screened through their letters. I still do not feel that this is a raffle of any kind.
I apologize for my lapse in memory on the $10 fee.

"D. It shall be unlawful for any person or organization whether for profit, non-profit, charity or any other purpose to offer an animal as a prize in response to participation in a game, contest, drawing of chance or any other similar event. The South Florida Fair is exempt from this provision. from www.co.palm-beach.fl.us/PubSafety/animal/page6.htm " Do a google search, and you will find many items on animals as prizes. Just letting you know that there are laws that govern this type of thing, and as I am not the one offering the prize, or directly affected by this its no skin off my nose as to the outcome, but I suggest you check the legalities of this before it proceeds.

So "worried guest"...you have a name?? Let me assure you...Amanda had no intention of doing anything illegal....and may I ask why you would be so concerned anyway??..If you have no interest in the contest, why all the FooFoo?? And dont you think the wiser thing to do, IF you were REALLY concerned would have been to contact Amanda herself instead of trying to run her down on a public board? Well I'm not real good with tact and diplomacy so this will be all you hear from me...Have a good day.......

Sad that there's always someone who has to ruin everything. An email to Amanda would have been the classy thing to do if you really cared, but nope had to go and create havoc on this board. Guess its a pathetic bid for attention from another "worried" troll.

What's with the "troll thing?" I've heard that somewhere else too. Hmmmm... Well "worried" we are very grateful that you took the time to point these issues out to us. I believe that Amanda was trying to do something good, and make it fun. It's really no different from someone coming to your door, meeting you, talking to you and paying for the horse. I realize that there may be laws against giving the horse as a prize - I'm not disagreeing with that - it's not something I have researched, nor do I care to. I still say that Amanda is doing nothing wrong. If I thought she was I wouldn't have allowed the post. Ultimately it's her decision. This was her way of allowing someone the enjoyment of owning a horse without the huge cost of purchasing it. The essay was a way to see into the inner thoughts of that person, perhaps in a way that meeting them wouldn't allow. It was meant to be a good thing, a fun thing and it's being turned into something "worrisome", and I just don't see that as being fair. Amanda meant no harm and I still ascertain that she would not allow her horse to go to an unworthy home. I agree that this could have been handled differently. The information for entering the contest is plainly listed and a concerned email could have been sent to Amanda or even to myself rather than creating a public hanging. Feel free to discuss this further with me at Heather@marestare.com I will not post your name.

I somehow have to laugh at the "worry" person. Thanks for all the Support. THe "contest" can be changed and reworded to read. Make a $10 donation to the "find Howie a home fund" and to be considered for his new home. Write an Essay telling me why you should be Howie's new Mommy or Daddy, and what horses mean to you. The best Essay is Howie's new place of residence.... ;D. Either way, its not illegal here...ROFL. Anyway, if your so "worried" about the animals. GO to your local shelter and spend time, take them dog food or cat food. The time spent complaining and judging others would be well spent elsewhere. They would love to have your help. Go to a local auction house where animals are bound for slaughter, buy one...and give it away to a good home. Donate something of value..... whether it be to animals or to humans. As far as my ethics or morals. I KNOW where Im going after I die. Sorry for any confusion here at Marestare...love all of you guys dearly....And the "find Howie a home" drive continues. This person, nor their antics will stop me from doing whats the best thing for HIM.

Guess its a pathetic bid for attention from another "worried" troll. I agree - an email would have been the best choice. But this nameless worried person should be satisfied now that the instructions have been rewritten. If not, I'm sure they will have no problem voicing their opinion again.
