Our mares should be leaving for stud this Saturday. I'm hoping to goodness that they concieve on the first time. When and if they do, what is the best way to tell by the vet that they are in foal (i.e. blood test, palpation, urine test, ultrasound)? And also which would be the most accurate and affordable?
Thanks for any help!

Ultrasound. It is not the cheapest, but it is by far the most accurate and THAT could save you a lot of money in the long run!!! I have had all other types of preg-check tests be wrong, both ways.

I second Steph's advice. Ultrasound also gives you the benefit of knowing whether the mare is trying for twins, so that you can pluck one of the embryos and give the other a better chance.

You can have your mares ultra-sounded 18 days after breeding!!! That sure makes it easier to schedule a re-breed if you need. Best way to go, not that expensive.............
