Hey Heather- won't the shavings just make a respitory illness worse? Maybe you can go some sort of non-allergenic route? I know they've got that stuff that is similar to used newspaper or something for small animals. Perhaps they have something like that in bulk for horses?

Yes, Heather, I was thinking about the paper too. I have used paper bedding for horses in the past and one of our local vets uses it all of the time. It is made from used newspapers that are torn into irregular pieces that are much larger than that paper that is used for small animals. It's actually a nice bedding to work with. The one for small animals gets a little dusty though and that would concern me. But the larger one for horses is not dusty, it clumps nicely where the horses urinate and is easy to clean. I used it for a gelding that was having allergy issues with the other beddings.

Isnt there any herbs or anything that could possibly help her out some?

I actually put down streu-fex and then the hay is on top of it. Streu-fex is a byproduct of straw www.fex.at/Streufex/She also gets an herbal tea twice a day. She's not fond of it being syringed into her mouth, but if she'd drink it on her own.... We're getting some good suggestions on using a sulfur based anti-biotic. I'm checking with another vet and we'll see what happens. Modified to reply to Deb - the massager I am using is vibrating only. I don't want to mess with her temp.

Heather, I don't know if you can use it or not with Rosie but we used Cotten seed hulls with our birthing stalling. It was easy on the mares legs and nice bedding for the foals.

Rosie and I share my laptop and I can't do alot of work on my laptop standing up in the garage....SO, Rosie is without cam tonight so that I can get some work done.
She asked me to tell her "adoring public" that she's fine. She's tired anyway because she was outside running and now she needs to rest.
Tomorrow we head to NC for the day, but I will try to get things running before I leave.
Thanks a bunch guys!!!

Thanks for letting us know, Heather. I was going to ask if anything was up, since I haven't been able to tune in the Rosie-and-Rowdy show tonight. Are you going to show Rosie how to USE the laptop before you leave for NC? LOL!

Rosie is hanging in there. She breathes pretty close to normal when she's inside - even when she's bucking and playing. It's when she goes outside in the heat that it gets to her and she wheezes and breathes fast and shallow. I have to share a computer with her and I've gotten so far behind in my online work that I've had to revoke her privileges. I'm working on setting up a desktop in the garage for her - lucky girl. Thanks for asking!!!

Heather, in my wanderings around the web looking at things about Rosie's diagnosis one of the sites I came across had heat as being a causal factor for this particular type of pneumonia.
If that's the case, it would make sense that she gets worse when she goes outside. I know you're winging this here, maybe she'd do better off if she stayed out of the heat for the season. That might give her some time to heal up completely before her system has to deal with heat which if it can be a trigger on it's own, what's it doing to a horse that's already compromised?
Here we have the twins on their stall rest until their bones get hard enough so they don't do anymore damage to themselves. It drives me crazy to keep them inside all of the time, but knowing that it's probably their only chance at a normal life helps my resolve and you can tell by looking at them, it's not bothering them as much as it's bothering me!!

Rosie cam on AGAIN. Rosie has her own little desktop computer and she is back in business. I'm downloading the software now and should have her back up momentarily.
ENJOY!!!!!
Oh - ps...sorry - didn't read the posts above before posting (thud) Rosie will be in the a/c all season if need be. We did that with Hopey last year and didn't put her outside until it was cold. We'll likely do the same with Rosie. I truly appreciate all the suggestions and advice that everyone is sharing...keep it coming as I'm doing all I can to keep this girl happy and with us.
