Yes Jack, good luck! I own a TB mare off the track, Ange. She was a late 3yo when I bought her. (That is our picture to the left) She is 20yo now & has a great attitude. I retrained her myself, and showed her in the 'High Jumpers' division at the saddle club I belonged to. Even got high point ;D Anyway, be for warned, a X racehorse can be a handful. Especially one just off the track. I assume that Ange had been at the farm I bought her from a couple of months, but man she was hot for the next couple of years!
Good Luck!

Good luck Jack. I have ridden some OTTBs and they were a lot of fun. One that was just off the track was a handful for a while. A trainer told his owner to get him out on the trails for a few months so he could learn to relax. He was ponied the first few rides but did well after that. Was more interested in his surroundings and his rider than the other horses. He became a great hunter and was a joy to be around. I hope you get your horse. Keep us updated and post pics if you get him.

IME, OTTB mares tend to cost around $1500, so $1000 makes good sense for a gelding, I'd guess. They do tend to be terrific horses because they've been handled a lot, well cared for (in most cases), and exposed to just about every kind of commotion. Of course, they are also opinionated and tend to be high-strung, and some are hard keepers. But I couldn't live without them, myself. Grab for the gusto! I hope you get the horse!

I've ridden two OTTBs one mare and one gelding and an OTSB gelding. All I can say is they are great horses! The mare was a brood after the track and then was starting to jump but had some issues and was sold to the people I met her through. The TB gelding was off track for a few months or a year (not really sure) but he was a Dream! The SB gelding was a great ride even with the pace trot.

I paid $1100 hundred for Hollywood, he did have a slightly bowed tendon. We had to stall rest him for a month and now he is completely sound and will pass any vet check...
I love him we have done everything together from jumping, to dressage, to halter, to team penning, to team roping, to western pleasure, to trail riding...
He is a dream, and definately will be with me for the rest of his life... he is now 6
