Lost in the Fog, last year's wonder-horse sprinter, has just been diagnosed with inoperable cancer and given only a couple weeks to live. The horse was a favorite of mine, so this news is crushing. Bloodhorse.com has the very sad story. news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=34925 |

I wish there were a way to write to his connections and offer condolences. The Fog is the horse of their lives, and they are both very elderly. He was undefeated until last year's Breeders Cup. According to the vets, his performance in that race would have been affected by the early tumor growths. The Louisville Courier also has a article ( www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060818/SPORTS08/60818045/1002/SPORTS ) that provides more detail about trainer Gilchrist's despair over the news and his decision to bring the Fog home and pamper him for his last days. So very, very sad. |

I've been crying all day over Foggy.. he is an amazing horse and I am just so glad I was able to see him back in April when he was "home" at Golden Gate Fields. What an amazing, incredible animal. I sent flowers to his stall at Golden Gate-- his trainer Greg Gilchrist is bringing him home tomorrow to his stall to live out his final days or weeks, however long it may be.

I wonder if Golden Gate Fields will bring him out for a tribute of some kind, so that his fans will have a chance to applaud him one last time. Are you in the Bay Area, Regret? Can you keep us posted on anything that you hear about? If there's an address, I'd love to send a note and some peppermints or something.

Devotee-- I am in the Bay Area. I went to see him run back in April at Golden Gate. That truly is his home- the entire crowd was cheering for him and him alone. I sent flowers to arrive tomorrow, since he's being taken home to his stall at Golden Gate today. I'll keep you posted on anything I know from here on out. I would love to contact Golden Gate and see if they will parade him one last time or something.. let him see his fans once more and let them see him. If he does, I'll go for that.

Oh, thank you, Regret! I saw the Fog run only once (in his ill-fated BC sprint, now understandable as probably caused by his growing tumors), but I followed his entire career and adored him so. Had he won the BC, he might well have been the first sprinter to become the Eclipse Horse of the Year last year. With all the bad news in the world, why this, too? So, so sad.

Devotee-- just to let you know, I'm going to be heading a priject suggested over at the racing forum I contribute to. We're going to make a scrapbook for Lost in the Fog's owners, with newspaper clippings, photos, letters and drawings of this great horse. I will be taking the completed project to Golden Gate Fields to give to his connections. Do you want to submit something? I'm taking poems, letters, notes, etc. PM me if you do and I can give you my address to send it to.

What a beautiful idea, Regret! Greg Gilchrist and Harry Aleo were part of the reason I was so enchanted by the Fog, so I would love for them to have something like that. I'll PM you.

Greg Gilchrist reports that Lost in the Fog is being given new drugs that might shrink his tumors. If the tumors shrink 50%, they will become operable, and the Fog can be saved. Meanwhile, the Fog is cleaning up his feed, enjoying carrots from well-wishers, and feeling comfortable. Bloodhorse.com and Thoroughbred Times both have stories.

The UC Davis vet treating Foggy now characterizes his chances as "reasonable." This is great news! Bloodhorse has the update: news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35041 . UC Davis, btw, is the top facility for equine oncology, so the Fog has good luck of location! (And today is the first anniversary of the Fog's King's Bishop win, so it's a fine day for some good news about him.) |

Lost in the Fog was euthanized yesterday. Despite the efforts of vets at UC Davis to reverse the growth of his tumors and to treat him with chemotherapy, his pain became too great.
