Has anyone had any problems with weaning their foals?? We weaned Doc and had no problems. We are weaning Dandy now and its like she has given up on life. She won't eat, she was rolling and I gave her a couple shots for colic. She kept casting herself in the stall so we put her outside. Then she would roll under the fence (wood) so she couldn't get up. Then we put her in another pen (metal) and she hangs her head so low. We honestly thought we were going to loose her. So we got her mom back in with her. Her ears perked up a bit but then she walked away. She did come back and try and nurse and Sandy was more then willing to let her, but she just took a few drops, if any, of milk. We have never had a foal do this and is really pulling on our heart strings. She is such a sweetie.

So sorry to hear of you filly's problems My suggestion is that you have a good Vet give that filly a good going over. It sounds like she is having digestion problems. Please don't wait too long either, as foals can go down hill fast!
Best of luck to you, I'll pray for your little girl

The Vet was called right away. Hes saying she was colicing... and told me what shots to give her. I am now waiting for my vet to get back in the office. i was just wondering if anyone had any idea what was going on, Hubby thought it might be she was depressed, but even after Sandy came into the pasture she never really perked up. I am wondering if a Wormer could have done something.

What kind of wormer did you give her, and how much? Did you worm her before weaning, and after, etc? There was a bad batch of wormer out there, but I believe that it was all recalled. It was around the first of the year , a lady's Paso Finos died!
Your Vet should come out in person & check her out! Is she making manurer? Eating grass/hay & drinking?
Sometimes if you throw too much at a foal, wean, worm, & vac it can be too much, and stress out a foal, and they can colic .
I hope she is getting better by now!!!!!

I hope she is doing ok. It may have something to do with the wormer - if she had a heavy load of worms in there, they can cause troubles as they create a big "blob" of dead worms that has to pass through the gut on their way out.
Let us know what you find out - hopefully it's an easy fix.

What colic meds are you giving her? Babies are particularly susceptible to ulcers when given banamine and should ONLY be given ketophen for colic/pain unless ALSO on Gastrogard... Hope all turns out ok!!!!

We wormed her with Ivermectin and then weaned her. She was making Poop! Seen her go twice myself. She was eating on Sunday but not on Monday. She was drinking lots of water. We gave her shots for Colic and also Veg oil to help pass the worms if she had lots of them. Monday she showed no sighs of colic, was drinking lots of water, followed us everywhere we went. She walked around a lot when we were with her. We called the Vet to check her. Monday night took a few bites of grain, got upset with Sandy for hogging the grain bucket. lol and then went to lay down. Later we went to check on her and she was up with mom, Sandy and had her nose in the hay. Not sure if she was eating or not. Tuesday morning she gave up the battle. She looked like she just laid down and went to sleep. My sweet little girl, Dandy rip.
