is it true that full check snaffles offer pretty good control Let me elborate, for the way you use the bit yes, the only thing that you would change is you pull slightly out and back when you first switch her to it. This way she associates the pull with a push and her nose going the direction you want. After doing that with my mare for a week(give or take, it's been 3 years) she responds to me just closing my hand on the rein and tighting my wrist.

No I leave the curb chain for her western bit. Curb chains on jointed bits(in my opinion) can be dangerous, especially if your horse likes to play with the bit. What can happen is the bit flexes and the chain activates, punishing your horse for doing nothing wrong. Try it without, pay special attention to the length of the mouthpiece. If it's a 5 inch check to make sure it doesn't pull her lips in, if that's the case she needs a 5.5 inch.

if those options don't work......my mare is EXTREMELY picky about bits (as she is about most things in life) and we've finally found something that she likes -- an eggbut snaffle with copper on it. i was weary to try the plain old snaffle because she can resist slowing down at times but she likes this one so much she is much happier to do as i say (most of the time). i found that many mares really like the taste of copper so i figured i would try it and it's worked great ever since!!! good luck :-)
