Well after long discussion with my vet, trainers that I have worked for, clients etc. I have decided to start my own breeding operation breeding high end AQHA and APHA horses...
I have a lot of questions to ask though..
What is the best route for starting an equine business? I know that I am going to have to apply for an initial loan, is there a company that specializes in equine related business? What else should I look into when beginning my business etc?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Skye....I have a book I'd like to send you, if you want it.
Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage By Cherry Hill
Review From Library Journal A comprehensive, practical discussion of all aspects of equine ownership, Hill's book is honest about the hard work and planning necessary for responsible horse care. The author assesses the horse's needs with regard to food, water, pasture, shelter, exercise, and medical care. There are suggestions for barn and pasture design, as well as a list of resources for further information. Cost estimates are realistic, but may vary in different locales. The information is presented in great detail, and readers who find the details cumbersome probably should not consider owning horses! Recommended for public and academic libraries maintaining equine collections. - Deborah Emerson, Monroe Community Coll. Lib., Rochester, N.Y. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.
The book title says Small Acreage, but can be applied to any size farm, from 1 acre to 100 acres. If you'd like the book, just PM me an address of where to send it to, and I'll get it in the mail as soon as I can!!

Thanks for asking this Skye! I've been looking into starting a small horse business myself.

It all depends on how large of an operation you want and what services you will offer. Start up can exceed a million bucks easily. Will you stand your own studs or have others too? Will you offer AI and transported semen? You will need all the proper equipment and facilities. You will also need insurance. Not only on your facility but also on your studs. And don't forget liabilty insurance either. The list goes on. Take a look at www.krugerranch.com to see what all they offer at their stallion station. They may also be able to help answer your questions about loans etc. It may help for you to work with a breeding facility for a while. This way you can get hands on training and learn all the ins and outs. May also give you ideas about what you want and don't want in your operation. A breeding operation like you are talking about is a HUGE undertaking. But a person like yourself can do it with careful planning. You need to sit down and map it all out. Don't forget anything on your list. Include your starting goals and future goals. And who knows, we may be watching some of your babies one day. Don't forget Mare Stare on your list! LOL.
