I have heard that you can train a cow to ride? if this is true that would be awsome. everytime i ask my mom about it she just says: "that would be so uncomfortable" but she never gives me a straight answer.

There is a woman that lives out by our house in Arizona that rides her cow in all of the local parades... They get along pretty darn well, it may look funny, and you need a very very well natured cow but you can do it. Raising one from a very very young calf would probably give you the best result or prospect, that is what she did with "Betsy"

I rode a calf that I raised. His name was Bozo and he was a Holstien. He rode pretty well - walk trot canter and was rather balanced for a cow. One thing to remember though is that cows do not have lots of stamina so they must be started very slowly. Also I rode Bozo in a Hack as I was afraid that a snaffle wouldn't fit him well. I started him just as I would a young horse and I trail rode him alot when he got older.

I never rode mine, but I did lunge my show calves (showed my longing for a horse at the school barn where you could only have cows, hogs, and sheep!!) LOL!! Helped with muscle tone alot!!

Well, the biggest problem I see with training a cow to ride is getting the horse to cooperate. Your average cow is a little heavy. But I suppose if you're talking a young Dexter or a Jersey, and a very sturdy QH or a draft horse, it might be possible. Then there's the problem of the stirrups and cloven hooves... I guess she could ride bareback, but unless you could teach her to sit up on her hind end somehow, I think her sternum banging against the withers would be uncomfortable for all concerned. Then there's the matter of how she could hold the reins...
