A lot of breeders use these kits and the alarms. The kits are pretty accurate. They measure the amount of calcium and magnesium in the mare's milk. I suggest using these since your mare does not wax. However, she may drip milk when she gets close and her bag will enlarge. Can you find out when her bag enlarged and if she dripped milk? Also find out how soon she foaled after the dripping started. The alarms are great too but aren't foolproof. If you have a mare that likes to sleep on her side a lot you will get a lot of false alarms. Shoshone at Freelands did this. And sometimes they don't go off. From watching the cams they seem to work most of the time. I'd say both are good investments.

Many people like the test kits. I'm not sold on them - like twnpnds said, they measure the calcium in the milk - the more calcium, the closer to foaling. However, it's also true that the more calcium there is, the whiter the milk is! So, if you monitor the changes in color of the milk, and the viscosity/stickiness of the milk, you will also have a good idea of her progression. Neither is foolproof, and a mare can have white, white milk and the strips can say she will foal immenently, and she will wait for days, or regress! It's up to you - some people feel more confident in the kit as it's more "official" than a general observation. Just remember that there are a lot of other signs and never depend upon any one too much while not taking hints from the others! Good luck!
