Ok my filly Roany came up lame a few weeks ago. I talked to a few of people and they said it sounds like an abcess. Well I had her on bute, and pen rest, a booty, etc.. she came up fine after a few days.. nothing ever blew out. and the only thing I could see wrong was she had some heat coming out of her hoof.Well about two weeks has passed..I go out to feed today and there she is hardley can walk again and picking up so sad like.. I bring her up and clean the leg look her over and there is the heat in the hoof AGAIN.. no puncurte wunds anywhere, no sweeling..Im just at a lost right now.. She is only three, tecnicaly four in february. I never hardley ride her and she is just been in the field to grow and mature. anyone have any ideas?

She probably picked up a small thorn of something that worked into the hoof and closed over long before you saw any lameness issues. Left alone, the lameness will come and go by itself indefinitely. To help speed recovery, this has worked wonders for me. You will need: cotton gauze, cotton roll, icthamol, bucket, warm water, epsom salt, and duct tape. First soak the hoof in warm (NOT hot) water with epsom salt - the water level should be above the coronet band. Soak until she either knocks the bucket over or until the water cools. then smear icthamol on the bottom of the hoof, pack cotton in it, warap with a little cotton rol, then wrap with duct tape (over the whole hoof, basically making a duct tape sneaker). Do this no less than every 3rd, but preferebly every other day for at least a week to 10 days. If you can pull the abcess out, keep up the soak & pack for at least 2 days after it bursts. I have been using this method for over 30 years with almost 100% success!. Steph

Steph, my vet uses the same method for absesses with the exception of soaking the foot. I have a mare that battles absesses all the time. I have to be so careful with her. Her stall has to be kept spotless and her turn out time has to be limited if she does not keep shoes on year around. Bute, antibiotic and time. I feel so bad for them because you can tell they are in so much pain.

Can I give you a little tip on the duct tape boot, Jackismacki? I am having to bandage my Paint gelding right now and the vet showed me a little trick with the duct tape. Instead of trying to wrap the tape around the hoof, build the boot on a slick wall or I use wax paper. That way I can roll them up, put a rubberband around them and keep them with the rest of my bandaging supplies. The duct tape peels right off of the wax paper. Overlap approx. 8 10" strips in one direction, then a second layer overlapping in the opposite direction. I can have my gelding rebandaged in just a few minutes.
Good luck with your filly. I think Windsongsabinos gave you some very good advise.

You know what the absolute best method is that I have found for treating abcesses? You guys are going to laugh.. but diapers. You soak the foot in epsom salts, then take a big swab of cotton and pack in the icthamal (icky stuff, make sure to either wear gloves or make sure you don't get it on your hands). I then use a small (infant) diaper and put it over the toe of the hoof. The diaper fits very well from coronet to coronet band in front and back. I then use the duct tape to seal it and I don't ever have to tape the hoof. I then stick the foot in an easy boot. My trainer taught me that method (and trust me.. I've had to pack my fair share of abcesses!) and it is the best method I've found yet that works.
Keep in mind that if the abcess doesn't come to a head and drain on its own, the abcess may be too far up in the hoof. If it takes more than a week of soaking or so for you to start seeing improvement, I would call a vet since it is possible that it will need to be lanced and drained.

Don't laugh at me, either, but I have used "heavy days" sanitary napkins (just get the bulkiest, most durable version you can find), also with duct tape. I have to be careful about showing off the contents of my vet cabinet to strangers . . . .

That is so cute, you might want to share this with your vet, he just might want to start using this method also. It sounds good to me. I think it would be sturdier padding.

Have you had your filly checked for navicular disease or any of the other common foot problems? (coffin bone movement/rotation, thrush, founder, etc.) I know that when a horse has one of these they are usually in pain constantly. Usually. I knew someone that was going through the same sort of thing. Her horse came up lame and had heat in his foot. So she put him on stall rest and soaked his foot. In a few days he was fine. She started letting him out again and a few days later same thing all over. She called the vet. When he came out the next morning, the horse was fine. He took some xrays and found nothing. But he did have some heat. So she soaked his foot again and gave some pain meds. The heat went away by the following day but she kept him in for a few days after that. A few days after letting him out again he went lame. This time he could hardly put weight on his leg and his whole foot, pastern, and fetlock was hot and swollen. The vet came out and took more xrays. He had navicular disease. He was an older horse and did recover but was retired from riding except to give a few small children horsie back rides in the arena once in a while. I have used sanitary napkins with my llamas. They just seem to work anywhere on their bodies and their thickness adds cushioning to the wound. Plus they are super absorbant. Steph's method works great for abcesses. Hope your filly gets well soon.

Well here is an update... I had my shoer out Saturday he says it probably isnt an abcess lets call the vet on Monday.. But in the mean time lets treat it like a infection.. So I go and get penicllin.Well by monday swelling is almost gone..I space on calling the vet like an idiot, so decide oh I will call in the morning on tuesday then..
Well tuesday I go out feed and give her a penicllin shot. I check the leg, and go oh the sweelling is gone, and there is a HUGE blown out abcess right at her hair line of the hoof.. Im like YAYAYAYAYAYAY I scream and holler, and jump for joy! Huge releif. I have been soo sick over her its not funny..Probably gave myslef an ulcer lol..
Well she is just fine now. Im so glad that I enede not having the vet out and a million dollors later just for a really bad abcess that finally blew. We couldnt of afforded her vet bill..sigh..
Well thanks so much everyone for the advice.. I ended up soaking her foot a couple of times, well as best as she would let me.. And I rubbed her leg down with liniment as well. She is all better now and is a normall horsey again.. She hates me though when I come out at first she thinks Im gona poke and stick her againn..poor thing.. lol..
Well I shall head off here I just know if I keep typing a mare will foal and I wil lmiss it..LOL..
