Don't know if this will be of any help, but I have a tank heater for the main water tank....I also fill up containers (cat litter jugs I've cleaned out) with hot water and pour in some of the water buckets that freeze up every morning and if the weather stays cold I also do it at noon and in the evening too. I have hoses that I have to disconnect and totally drain every night when we have freezing weather (which is often here in WV....although not this year!) My barn is insulated so the water buckets in there don't freeze unless we have several days of constant freezing weather in a row. I guess the key is to drain your hoses after using them. They never freeze that way. Hope this helps! I wish we would get some freezing weather here....I'm not used to having this much mud!!! YUCK!

A hammer. It works the best. Take it down to the barn a couple times during the night and smash the ice with it. Works the best. Also the bigger the container of water, the longer it takes to freeze. They do make bucket heaters as well. Unhook your hoses, wrap the faucets, bring the hoses to the house for the night. IF your hoses freeze, put them in the bathtub in warm water, thaws them out real quick. If all else fails, haul buckets of water from the house to the barn, or get a whole bunch of water jugs and do it that way. I live in the seattle area and we've gotten hit hard this year with frozen everything, mud, snow, wind, rain, we've gotten it all. I currently have 6 inches of snow outside. And it's the second time in the last month that we've gotten it. The weather is really really wierd this year. Good luck.

From Minnesota ;D where we have lots of cold weather. Gosh i do feel sorry for you. If you are not used to this weather it can sure be tough to take. Tough even some days when you are used to it.
You have a bucket heater so that will keep the bucket from freezing. I just hang the hoses from the rafters in the barn and they don't freeze that way since the water all drains out. Any yep, a hammer comes in handy in the mornings for those frozen buckets. Saves kicking them with the foot!

Well, moving the buckets out of the direct wind will help some. Wrap the faucets in anything you have if you don't have one of those faucet insulators.. A thick blanket is what we use here. Make sure it's all covered all the way to the wall and the end. Duct tape works to hold it in place and even vet wrap works too. We're supposed to stay at around freezing up here until Monday too. Everything's wrapped up tight, we've got buckets lined up to fill waters with and the hammer goes in the pocket when we go outside. We have 11 horses here (one pony) and 9 goats and tons of birds, plus the usual dogs and cats (who have all finally made their way inside). Everybody gets extra straw (a whole bale each) to snuggle in. They are loving it.

hammers are awesome :-) also put a plastic frisbee in the water buckets - leave it on the top of the water with the hollowed side facing up - when the horse goes to take a drink they'll push down on the frisbee moving water around.

have to admit to chuckling a bit at this all... LOL Here in CO we are expecting high temps in the single digits and lows well into the single and possibly double digits below zero for the next 5 days... Add to that snow, sleet and freezing rain and we have some miserable people going out to feed the ponies and clean the stalls...

Boy Wendi. And you live where? LOL. We don't get a lot of freezing here but we do get some. But I grew up in northern Illinois and let me tell ya. We got some cold weather there. Remember those days where it was minus 50 degrees with the windchill and having to feed and water critters. You can put a 2x4 across water troughs which will help. You can also use 2 liter pop bottles filled about half full with water. You want them to be half submerged. So fill with just enough water to allow this. Another thing you need to do is remove the ice after you break it. I use a clean shovel. After removing the ice you can add hot water. Remember, hot water freezes faster than cold water sometimes. You want your water in your buckets warm not hot. You may have to do this a few times a day. Putting your buckets in the sun will help keep it from freezing so fast. I found that the water doesnt freeze as fast in my black rubber buckets. Dark colors absorb heat sort of thing, I think. We stretch our hoses downhill to drain after filling up the trough and buckets. Wrap those pipes and spigots with whatever you have and duct tape. Can use old blankets or even feed bags. You can use tarps or shade cloth on your shelters to help block wind. These are pretty easy to put up too. They can be hung on nails or even tied on thru the grommets. I have used tarps a number of times for temporary shelters and wind breaks. Bed down with extra straw. Blanket your horses with whatever you got. Even a light sheet is better than nothing on your old horses. Can even double the sheets if you need to. Come morning they will all probably be in the sun soaking up it's warmth. Some light shivering is normal and should stop after they do a little sunbathing and moving around. They'll all be ok. Will probably make out better than you will. LOL. Good luck Wendi and may the sun pour it's warmth out to you soon!

lol! It's -4 here right now and the sun hasn't even gone down yet.... The horses all have their blankies on and have a double feed tonight. The water troughs all have working heaters and the close to popping mommas, the babies, and the old lady are all inside. LOL Got a fire in the woodstove and a hot bath running.
