Poor Trouble and Surprise, I just ca't seem to get ahead of this darn fungus infection. Even with the change into the larger stall and the twice weekly baths with medicated shampoo, they're still getting new places of infection. It's really wierd that I have some healing going on and hair growing back but it's still spreading. Very frustrating. Other than that they're doing pretty well.
We didn't get x-rays done this week and I'm not sure why. I'm kinda thinking it was a mix-up with the vet tech not understanding that we had a couple of different things going on and scheduling us for next week (when we'll do more trimming) and not understanding we were supposed to be scheduled for the x-rays this week as well.
Trouble and Surprise are up to their usual antics and still trying to tag team whoever comes their way. Escape is still a big thing on their minds. They really like the bigger stall but I haven't been able to put them out in the paddock because they're eating dirt out there. Don't know what they're missing in their diet, but it's obvious it's something or they wouldn't be chowing down on dirt - or eating my barn down. I will have to see if I can locate some kind of supplements for them with whatever it is they are currently lacking. Thought I would start with the new Farnam product for chewing. I have a friend who swears by it. Now if I can just locate it here somewhere.
Surprise doesn't do well with the hot weather. Her breathing gets pretty shallow and she rests a lot but when it cools down she's a terror! Making up for her quiet time. Trouble is always ready to accomodate her when she decides it's time to play rough. There's lot's of rearing and striking and ripping around. The bad part is they think they should be able to play with me like they play with each other, which is definitely not allowed. Being corrected for it always leads to pouting babies. They are so funny.
Well, that's the update for now. Will check back in when I know something.

I just got an email on the Foalwatch list talking about babies eating dirt. They suggested Grostrong Minerals because it gives extra copper and zinc which are two reasons why horses will eat dirt. I just ordered some. www.admani.com/allianceequine/MineralsVitamins.htm

Thanks, meddywv, for the info on the Grostrong Minerals. I will have to check into that. I sure would like to be able to turn them out into that little paddock in the sun for a while each day.
Heather, yes, I did get the booster, I thought I sent you an email letting you know it had arrived but the way my mind is working lately, I may have just thought I should send you an email. Anyway, it's here and Dave has promised he will work on it tomorrow. We were just talking about it tonight and he's got it figured out now just needs to get it in place. Hopefully we'll be calling you to find out what our next step is. Cross your fingers, toes and anything else that might help.

Everythings Crossed Mikael! I can't wait to see these two on cam! I fell in love with them from the first news video I saw, and again with every story you've told us.
In addition to the minerals, do they have access to a red salt block? That would be another reason for eating dirt.

Yes, Cheri, they have a red salt block free access so that's not it. But they've been licking the walls and eating them whenever they could get their lips locked around a chunk from the beginning. They've not really been out except in the paddock to be able to see the eating dirt thing before now. The things that bothers me most about the dirt is they're not getting just dirt into their mouths, they're getting gravel. Colic issues around dirt are a big enough fear without what gravel could do to their gut.
We;re working on the booster today. Hopefully we'll get this figured out.
We did do another round of fungus baths yesterday. Poor Surprise has a number of new locations that irruptions are occurring. I think the immune systems on both of these babies suck. Trouble has a cut on his leg that has been there over a month and it's making very little progress healing. So I think I'm going to have to find something to stimulate their immune systems. I used a product with my horse with EPM that really helped him immensely. I'll have to go back through my records and see what I can find on it. In the meantime, I think I'm going to give both of them the herbs that Heather sent me for joint ill. The label says something about stimulating the immune system. It sure can't hurt anything.
We noticed yesterday that Trouble and Surprise are the same height. While Trouble outweights her because he's bigger boned, she's definitely caught up with him. And, of course, she's the boss!

risingrainbow-- perhaps they are just bored? Do you have maybe a jolly ball or a "Licks" in their stall that they could play with? Babies can be mouthy and need some way to release that energy, especially if they're not allowed out in the paddock very often. Getting them some stimulation could definately cut down on the dirt-eating!

A lot of the time when horses eat wood or dirt they are lacking in salt. Try giving them salt licks or mineral licks. That's what we did with our guys and they stopped right away.
Glad things are getting better!

The cam is now up on Surprise and Trouble. www.marestare.com/twins.htm Dave was crawling around in the rafters trying to get as much of the sun glare out as he could and I think we're good to do. Only one rule while viewing if you see them doing anything particularly cute you must report! I'm keeping track of their adventures ;D

Cheri, I haven't figured out how to get the link directly in when I post a reply so I went in and edited and added it then, but the time I had it done, you'd beat me. So I know I'm doing it the slow way. don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Mikael, they look really good for what they've been through. The angle that I am seeing them on they look amazingly strong and healthy, knowing their weakness. I have to say your doing a great job with them!
Sorry, didn't mean to beat you to it. I understand about doing all this while learning it. I'm doing the same thing. How to post a link(picture, cam link, etc) When you hit reply on any thread on the board you see a row that says Subject, below that Message Icon:, Below that "Add Tags"<= this is where you'll find the add a link button. There's 2 rows of buttons the one you want is the second one on the second row. It has a globe and a piece of paper on it. and when you click it it gives you this [*url*][*/url*](without the *) What you would do is click that and copy and paste the web address or picture URL where I have the address for the cam. Again without the *, They're just there for demontration. It'll look like the one below. [*url*]http://www.marestare.com/twins.htm[*/url*]
