hello everyone okay so i have some questions.. my cousin has a maiden mare that a month ago, the vet estimated her at five weeks to foaling(news to us long story) any ways... Today she is really sweaty between her teats, has some blood like disharge around the vulva area. I have been looking up tons of things on maiden mares but not finding what i need. Hoping for some of you pros have some info. Is this something we should be calling the vet over or is it normal? thanks for all the help Astradawn...

another thing she is starting to sink in around her tail area. She is being stalled at night just incase since its rather chilly here in the night about -20ish at the moment... Any advice she is going to call her vet tomorrow if the mare looks at all different. I guess im just wondering what your experiences with maiden mares have been?

If you feel better having the vet out, call him. Always better safe than having mare or foal in trouble. It could be that she is losing the mucous plug that closes up the uterus until shortly before birth, could mean something else if it´s more blood. Found an answer that does a nice job explaining... Good luck, Emma www.horse-sense.org/archives/20020527181321.phtml

I agree that if you're concerned get your vet involved. The symptoms sound to me like she's getting close.....but they are all so different.
Keep us posted!

I just talked to my cousin on the phone, she figures it shouldnt be to long, she is getting really loose in the vulva area and her teats are filling out as well. Is it common for a maiden mare to bag up before hand? i have read that most dont. So many questions

Because it´s the first time for them to come into milk, some maiden mares don´t develop a full bag. Usually the bag will be full AFTER foaling latest, but if she´s filling and relaxing in the backend, better watch her.
Good luck, Emma

Every maiden is different and because you don't know any exact breeding dates your vet is going by an estimate. This could be off a few days, a few weeks, or even about a month. Keep a close eye on her and if you get concerned by all means get ahold of your vet!
