Heather, Melanie, and Deirdre were in a rush to get to the barn. Isla, a little welsh mare was going to foal at any moment. Melanie arrived at the barn first. "Mum, Deirdre...come here, be quick!" Sounded her voice on the radio. Heather replied. "Yes, Hun, on our way!" Heather and Deirdre arrived at the barn two minutes later. "Whats The....AHHH!" screamed Deirdre in distress.
Heather ran over. "Its A Red bag..." She entered the stall as the bay mare's waters broke..
Heather kneeled by Isla's side and strocked her gently, so Isla got to know Heather's scent easily. Heather watched as the red bag emerged from the vulva. I need help...I need help! she thought. "Deirdre, Call Lexington Vets!" Heather exclaimed.
***20 minutes later***
Heather broke the red sac and blood squirt. She was soaked. Deirdre ran back. "The vets here!" she said. "Hello, Heather" The vet who was named Melinda said. Her assistant, Teresa, said hi too. "Melinda, Shes having a red bag, I can't tell if the foal is in the right position," Heather said breathlessly. Good Girl, You'll be fine, you'll be fine.. Heather strocked the mare gently again.
***15 minutes later***
"The birth isn't progressing," Teresa politely spoke to Heather.
"I'll try and turn the foals head, Its in the wrong position...Its hooves are in position," Melinda inserted her hand and tried to reach the foals nostrils. "I...Can't...Reach!" she said in exhaustion. "Here, Let me try..." Teresa said..."Neither can I!" Teresa murmured in-patiently."I'll try..." Came a little voice from outside the stall. It was Melanie. "Are you sure, Melanie?" Melinda asked. Melanie nodded."Come on then, Have a go, If you can't reach, just tell us and we'll have to take her to the vets with us," Melinda exclaimed.Melanie entered the stall and pulled some gloves on.
Melanie kneeled... Here goes! Melanie inserted her hand...She felt nostrils...She took hold of the nostrils and pulled the foals head round. "Ive done it...I Have!" Melanie said to Melinda, Teresa, and Heather. "Well Done, Melanie. Now take hold of the hooves and pull.." Melinda said. "Sure..." Melanie took hold of the foals hooves and pulled...She pulled hard until a chestnut foal slipped out. It wasn't moving... Come on...Come on... Melanie thought and then began moving the foals back leg up and down really fast...the foal was breathing!
She went to check if the foal was a filly or a colt...
"Its a Chestnut Filly..."
Heather ran over. "Its A Red bag..." She entered the stall as the bay mare's waters broke..
