Have any of you guys ever fed Strategy GX, it is a pelleted feed put out by Purina. It has 14% protien, 6% fat, etc. I am taking casper off of his current diet of whole oats, rice bran oil, show glo, and horseshoer's secret, for a simpler, better balanced pelleted feed. I am hoping it doesn't make him hot because of the added protien, but right now we REALLY need muscle. Also, the vet, trainer, and feed rep think that strategy would be a good alternative to all of the mixing, but the barn manager thinks the protien will be too much for him to handle, what do yall think??

I personally like Safechoice. Doesn't seem to make em as "hot".

I feed strategy gx. I have been really happy with it. It doesn't make them hot. I have 26 head with lots of different type temperments, some that will get hot if you give them half a chance and they're just fine on it.
But I think all horses are different and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. Of the different feeds I've tried this one has been the most consistent for me.
Because I have a lot of young growing horses, I worry about a feed being hot and causing them to grow too fast and all the problems that entails. This has passed my test.

i feed my mare mollie Strategy GX and have loved it. In the (almost) 5 years that i've owned her now she has been on it and I don't think she's ever been hot because of it. She's also on a supplement from Wendall's Herbs called Moody Mare that has REALLY helped in mellowing her down. I know you're trying make Casper's diet simpler but there's another Wendall's product out there just labeled Calmer that one of my friends has has gelding on. He used to get extremely worried in new situations and the Calmer really took the "edge" off. Maybe something to look in? Regardless, I highly recommend the Strategy!

One of the horses boarded at the farm I work at is a standardbred mare and she is fed a scoop of Strategy in addition to a scoop of grain twice a day. The mare is a sweetheart with a puppydog personality. Julie

Amby I have fed Strategy for many years, and love the result! I have feed it to in foal brood mares, foals, weanling's, yearling's, two year olds, and my show horse. Horses, ponies & miniatures horses. Pretty much what ever I wanted to get the best feed It has never made anybody hot. The only thing that I add is in the winter, I soak alfalfa cubes & beet pulp for my horses so they get a warm moist meal. I probably over feed, but I like meat on my horses Feel free to look at any of my animals on my web pages: goldenspony.com Right now I am feeding it to Cookie (she is in foal) Fire Fly, and Rajah. All the rest are on a 10% maintenance pellet because they are just standing around doing absolutely nothing Lucky animals

OK, Strategy has been recently reformulated to Strategy GX. Purina has added extra vitamins, like selenium (can't remember what else at the moment). It is an improved formula from what they say. It was supposed to start selling this month (Feb) but apparently some feed dealers ended up with it about a month early. We use Strategy and have for several years and I have been extremely pleased with the results. Here's hoping the "New" formula will top the "old" formula. Another thing I like about strategy is the fact it is not a mix of grains and every bit of the feed is utilized by the horse. We don't have to feed near what the recommendations on the bag are. In other words, we get better weight gain and condition on our horses with a smaller amount of strategy than we did on a grain mix with the same amount of weight of feed.

Thank-you gals so much!! He LOVES it which is good for my very Finnicky horse. right now i am mixing it half and half with oats, just to get rid of them, and the extra fiber and calories certainly won't hurt him. He hasn't gotten hot yet so maybe he won't!! I hope he doesn't as I plan to start riding him in an english saddle next week. Again, thank-you guys for all you help.
