Hello folks , Im not sure how many find themselves with a mare who has lost foal OR a foal who has lost its mom?
But tonight 2-28-2007 @7:45 PM my 15 yr old APHA mare suddenly foaled a still born lethal white colt. She was 338 dys. Please know this mare is a tovero & she was bred to a tobiano . SO , overo to overo breeding was not the case here.
What I would like is to offer this mare locally as a nurse mare .IF there might be an orphan foal in need ? Sure would love to help someone if I can. Trying to reach out in as many places as I can in hopes this mare can help a baby in need. Im located in Eastern PA, 40 min west of NJ / 2 hrs nrth of Philly/ 1 hr south of Scranton. Kindly, Lisa

This is a wonderful offer - God Bless you and your mare... If there's someone in need out there, I hope they find you. Is your vet aware of this....they could keep an eye open too.

when our QH mare lost her foal many years ago, we called the vet clinic and the local university and within a day they had found an orphan foal. Remeber to milk off the colostrum and freeze it in ice cube trays (then put it in zip-loxk bags in the freezer to keep fresh) You will need to milk the mare every couple of hours to keep the milk going well and get the colostrum out. Best of luck!!!

Thank you so much for all your kind words. We were able to get colostrum milked & saved. The mare is doing well considering. I have word out to as many places as i could possibly think of. It would make my heart feel much better about the situation knowing the mare can help a foal in need.

We had to euthanize our colt this year and I too called all the local vet clinics, posted on many boards and had friends call their vets. I also put out word at the local feed stores. We never did find an orphan foal for my mare and she has started to dry up. Good luck finding an orphan foal. As far as the leathal white thing. A tovero is actually pretty high on being able to be a carrier of the OLWG because of the overo linage. Normally a tobiano who has overo linage somewhere in their background can also be a carrier. Obviously both mare and stud are carriers so sad you had to find out this way. I know EXACTLY how you feel my colt would have been 3 weeks old today.

Yeah.....sure knew the tovero pattern could carry the LW gene & the thought crossed my mind when I bred my stallion to her last year as he has produced tovero & overo foals on arabian & QH mares.
So the thought was there at one point, but I never thought much more about it. He has bred a few frame overo mares and produced healthy overo foals.
So,tobiano breeders....do your homework well on your breeding programs .My stallion is by spookernatural -tinkys spook & scootin spook breeding. His dam is minimal white tobiano by 2 tobiano horses w doc bar - tarzan dude breeding.
Sometimes tobianos should be registered tovero and are not then you have the tobianos(like my stallion) that carry an overo gene. So wow.....it can get deep.I still think there is a lot to be learned on this issue. No luck on finding a foal for her yet.

Sorry for your loss. Supernice to offer your mare for someone in need. As far as Tovero, we have a 3 year old stud colt. When we registered him as a baby, we put Tovero (he's by a Tovero [his sire and dam both registered Tobiano] stud who is homomzygous and out of a solid (overo-breeding stock) mare. Well, we put Tovero since he is a cross between tobiano/overo, also has a blue eye. APHA sent the papers back as Tobiano. We questioned this but they still said Tobiano, so what do you do. He has his first foal this year btw. Out of a overo mare and he's (Tobiano) and the baby has sky blue eyes. Mostly tobiano markings. Soooo, what do you suppose they will put?? Tobiano or tovero? Guess they will put whatever they want regardless. Maybe we should just have them all checked for OWLS if there is any overo in there.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.I thought Penn State Vet School might help you as they deal with so many horses at the New Bolton Center.
