My mare is a 12 yro rocky mountain horse. Who for the last 2 yrs that i have had her has never shown ne sign of ever being in heat. She is never to be bred as she is my daughters 4h horse and just itsn't breeding material. We moved her to a freinds patures so we could doome work on ours. She has been there before. She was put in with 2 young mares. If u go by Jan 1st they are 2 yrso. If u go by there actual date they aren't. Neways, we checked on her a week ago and everything was fine. We checked on her friday one week later and they had put a large paint stud in there. One look at my mare told me somthing was wrong with her. I immendently removed her and brought her home. We thought it was a bladder infection with the signs she was giving until i saw the horrible discharge from her. Mine u this is now Saturday. She would kick at her belly try to pee with little or no results. Unable to get a vet we delt with it the best we could. Monday(this evening) she went to the vet. It is absolutly horrible what this stud did to her. She was brutelized so bad that she let him breed her. The stud has torn her up so bad we don't know if she is going to make it. She has two holes in her hoohool wall and so much inflamation in her pelvis that she can barely pass manure. It is awful. She also has peritinitis*sp* (which is an infection in her abdominal cavity). The vet can't even check her uterus becuz of the swelling. So if the infection or colicing don't kill her she is still going to have to indure flushing of her uterus depending what he finds when he can get to it. I am absolutely apauled to this. One she was my mare and never to with a stallion and they chose to do that. Two he is breeding very young horses to this monster. I am not saying all studs are that way. But this one is. Has neone ever heard of a stud doing this to a mare. We are praying that she will pull thru....both physical and emotional..emotional is going to be harder to heal. She is my first horse I ever had and means alot to me, and for someone to let this happne ....specially me...i should have nver taken her out there. So plz if yall could keep her in ur prayers i would apperciate it. Also i am posting this here as i would like to hear if neone of u have ever dealt with someone close to this.....srry for my rambleing and thank u for taken the time to read. Be careful were u let ur horses go..i learned the hard way and they will never leave me again no matter what!!!!!! heather

First off I am so sorry this happened to your horse. Do ppl not care or what? I wish I had some kind of information for you. Secondly I was just wondering if that person could be responsible for the bills or at least some kind of help from them as everyone knows vet bills can be harsh. I am glad you got her seen by the doctor at least that shows you do care about her.

I'm so sorry for your mare and your trama you both have had to go through. Yes, the people should have to pay all the vet bills, if you didn't agree they could have your mare in with a stallion!!!! If these are "friends" of yours, they should have already offered you some financial help. I pray your mare has a full recovery soon.

I will keep your mare in my prayers. What a horrible thing for her to endure. I sincerely hope that she pulls through and recovers. What was that person thinking? Not only was he irresponsible with his own horses, you just don't breed someone else's horse without their permission. I agree wholeheartedly with everyone else...make d*** sure he pays your vet bills - at the very least.
One last thing Heather...please don't blame yourself. You wouldn't have sent her there if you had any idea this would happen, right? Who would have thought it could have? You said yourself, she had been there before, apparently with no incident. So don't say that you should never have taken her there, you are not psychic, you were doing the safe thing by putting her in a different pasture while yours was being worked on. You couldn't have known it would turn out like this. So please don't blame yourself. The person to blame is the stallion owner.

I agree whole heartedly about sending any and ALL vet bills to the stallion owner! Make them be responsible for their horse! As far as the mare and esecially getting "raped" for a better word, I have heard of this. I knew some people through our paint horse club that they told me they had a stallion that would do this to the mares. Needless to say they gelded him! My parents also took their walking pony to get bred to a walker stud (shes maybe pushing 14hh.) and he was much larger. The stud ended up penatrating her through her rectum (this is what I heard I was not there). Needless to say this mare never took again even with AI. I hope all turns out well for you in the end and make sure you make the person accountable for their actions. If they want to stand a stallion so bad, I would make them think twice about that one!!!

Well...we nearly lost Dolly yesterday, and of course no vet. My trainer made a mad dash over and we worked on her for 4 hours. She was pumped full of fluids...pain and anti inflamatory meds...we were able to get ice in her to try and get the swelling down...and we got oil and kayro into her...afterwards she was put into her stall as there was nothing else we could..and behold she finally pooped...I have never been to happy to see that...She seems alot better today..thou she is still very sick...if we can keep the swelling down so she can potty and get all the infections under control...she should recover...she is going to a differect vet on friday thou its 2 hours away...this lady knows her stuff...I will update Friday night when we get back.. Heather,I read your post last nigt and didn't dare post as I would no longer be allowed on MS.I just can't believe someone would do this, wasn't anyone watching or listening.I feel terrible for you and your mare and pray she continues to improve.
This stallion needs to never be allowed to come in contact w a mare again.

Heather, I was wondering if you've talked to the owners of the pasture you had her in? Was it their stallion or boarding someone elses horse? I just was courious if they have called you to see how your mare is doing since you've taken her home. I pray she makes a full recovery soon.
