Ok my mare is really showing now and has a small udder. Rear end is relaxed, ect. Now my question is, today she has been up and down, rolling, sweating some and sticking her upper lip up. She may be getting that baby in the right position, but last night she had a small amount of blood coming from her nose. Nothing terrible but a trickle. And I don't have a clue as to when she was really bred,(I posted about that earlier) It was the end of July from the bull I was told. But the stud left the trainers barn in June! Sooo I think by the way things are going that she may have been bred sometime in June. She isn't colicky. Any ideas people??

Sounds to me as if she is getting ready.....Really hard to say though! What does her bag look like? Also is she a maiden?

Ummm...I'd be concerned about the blood coming from her nose.....I have never seen that. Have you called your vet to ask what may be causing that?

I am with Heather.... those nosebleeds with your mare need to be checked out. Consult your vet. There are some syndromes and diseases that can cause nosebleeds. You need to find out the causes of the nosebleeds.
I know in people that hypertension can cause nosebleeds as well as can certain bleeding disorders. Also some infections. And irritations like super dry air, and such. But you should get the nosebleeds checked out by a vet , it is better to be safe than sorry later. Hopefully the problem isn't too worrisome; but you can't be too careful now with a mare in foal. JMO

one of my ex-instructors had a 2 year old TB gelding who got nosebleeds pretty frequently in the spring - scared ALL of us. the vet wasn't 100% sure but thought it could be related to allergies...... never did the gelding any harm and he the next spring it didn't happen again.... i'd have it checked out though.

Hey I googled it and found this statement I hope it helps you!
Hot, humid weather can cause the blood vessels in the nasal passages to become dilated as the horse attempts to lose heat through respiration. Additionally, many plants and allergens in pastures can irritate the nasal membranes and air passages. Nose bleeds following exercise or in hot weather can be nothing more than examples of such irritation. Nosebleeds can also be signs of more serious problems though. Bacterial or fungal infections can irritate nasal passages and they can become very serious. Nasal tumors or polyps can occur and these can cause nosebleeds as well. If these problems persist, it is still a good idea to get a good physical examination done which should include an endoscopic exam of the sinuses.
I would have her tested for infection to be on the safe side! Also, are you aware if she was ever fed fescue (sp) hay or grass! I would want to have her checked for that too.

ok, l dont want to scare you but l would talk with your vet right away. My friend had a mare in foal who had a nosebleed when she was close to full term. Wasnt much but they called the vet, who checked her and found temp up slightly, drew bloods and said keep an eye on her while they waited over the weekend for results. 3 days later mare delivered stillborn foal, and bloodwork showed nasty infection. Now we always call the vet for nosebleeds in pregnant mares.

Wow, thanks for all the info. She has been off fescue for three months now.I took her off it early because of not knowing for sure her due date. I do use the pelleted pine bedding, and it has to be sprayed down when it gets to dry.We have alot of dust in this barn.I can't wait until we can build our new barn. I even wet the floors down too. I will call my vet today. Can't ever be to careful!! Thanks again!! Kim

Kim, please keep us posted, it might be something we all will have to watch for. I also have a dirt floor barn, but their all outside most of the time. It's still something I would follow up with and again keep us posted on your Vets findings. Good luck.

Nothing but allergies from the dust. She is getting closer to foaling though!!!! She is acting alot better and has started to change her ways of standing, laying down more, she didn't use to lay down at all. Just a nervous horse mom..

My parents broodmare used to get nose bleeds in the summer. She got them from being worked and the heat. Scared us too the first time we saw it.
