I don't know why but my mare will prefer to pee in the hay she will also go into the barn to pee and come back out. I think my stallion pees in the hay also. I haven't seen him but the hay on the ground is wet in spots. Anyone know why they might be doing this? Also this part I don't mind but both the mare and stallion prefer to poo in just a few spots of the field.........don't know why but that part I don't care. I was giving the horses water a couple weeks ago and sprayed a few dots on my stallion (he likes a bath) well he went and pawed the ground then started rolling in the dirt......reminded me of my dogs.......lol

My horse will be eating his hay and then he paws at it, gets it underneath his belly and pees on it. Silly boy. Maybe it wasn't good quality hay or something?

Patty, I can be sitting out at my barn and my slob of a mare, lol will stop eating her hay, walk in the stall, poop and then walk out. If I put her hay in her stall she will do her business in it, so I got a big compressed bale for her and the foal. Kinda hard to poop on that. I can fill the whole wheelbarrow up with her messy stall. With both of them in there its twice as messy now. On a lighter note, my gelding poops all in one nice spot in the corner. Only drawback is that the wall is getting filthy from his poop. He sticks his butt right against it. The yearling poops against the front of the stall so half lands in his feed bucket and on the top of the stall and over the stall. Before I realized he was going in the bucket once I dumped his feed in there and there was poo in the bucket. Ewww....lol

I had a vet tell me once that they prefer to pee in the hay because they don't like to get splashed in the legs with it.. So if they have a harder surface and then hay they will chose hay most of the time.. Now if it's a straw pen with hay and they chose hay well can't help you there lol.. but the not splashing made sense to me.
