We have had a colt year this year - 8 foals and only 2 are fillies. All have been born easily and with no trouble for the mare.
But today was different - today our beautiful mare Nikki went into labour and the baby was upside down. The back of the head and neck were trying to come out first. This is a disastrous position for a foal - there is such a small window of time for a foal to be born alive - and this little one didn't make it. He was a gorgeous buckskin colt - a Buckeroo grandson - he was tiny and very correct - it is a tremendous loss for us. His mom seems to be doing OK this afternoon. It was difficult getting the foal out - but I managed OK. Nikki got up and was nudging her little guy to get up. When I carried him out she was upset - but she soon figured out that he was gone and has settled back down. I'm sure she will be sore for a few days - the poor girl - I feel so badly for her.
I guess as a breeder I need to expect these things to happen - but it sure is tough to lose a much wanted foal.
Dakota Frost is hanging in there - not sure what her signs (if any) will be. She did a lot of butt pushing when I was trying to get Nikki's foal out - she has done lots of belly kicking - but then goes over and starts eating - so I'm just not sure when she will foal.

I am so sorry to hear of yours and Nikki's tremendous loss. It sure is very heartbreaking. Hope Nikki will be ok. I feel so bad for her too. I hope all the best for Dakota Frost and that all works out good. It is so hard to know what to say at a time like this except to say how bad I feel and pray Nikki will be fine and Dakota Frost has an easy and safe delivery.

Dakota Frost is on Cam1 - no horses on Cam2. We took Dakota Frost to the vet today to confirm that she really is pregnant - and she is. The past 48 hours she has regressed - her bag is down to almost nothing and she stopped butt pushing - breathing heavily - etc. So I started questioning whether she really was in foal. I am very happy that she is!!!!!!!!!!
Starbrite foaled on May 5th - I keep forgetting to change the scrolling text above the cam - sorry for the confusion!!!!!!
