I foaled out a mare a long time ago that foaled standing up. The baby was slippery and hard to hold onto. Having a second person there would be very helpful. Another thing I haven't seen anyone comment on is the fact that the cord breaks before the blood in the placenta can transfer to the foal. I just didn't want anyone thinking their mare was bleeding to death. I've foaled out a lot of mares and seen a lot of problems, but I was shocked at the amount of blood that came out Diane

that reminds me with the one mare we had 3 people for the foal (friesian foal) and the second one... um 5 people! And the second one we where able to hold long enough, the first one we did not experiance alot of blood though I foaled out a mare a long time ago that foaled standing up. I do remember on the 2nd of my three foals there was a lot of blood. The person foaling my mare out always has her husband around just for her...He actually walked around the stall holding onto the cord until the bleeding slowed. I just remember walking in the stall the next day and thinking oh my gosh!!! I relaxed a little after she told me that it was okay.
