First of all, you need to have any picture(s) on a website or on a picture hosting website (such as http://www.photobucket.com). Setting up an account with photobucket is easy and free, and I will be using them in this example because they are the most widely used, and who I use.
To post your avatar and/or signature, go to Profile at the top of the page in the blue bar under the Mare Stare "film strip" and choose Modify Profile. If you scroll down a bit, you will see where it says "Avatar URL".
Once you have your photo uploaded to Photobucket, or the photo hosting site of your choice, you should see a choice of photo addresses. On Photobucket, it is below the photo: URL, Tag, and IMG. URL is what you want for posting avatars. Copy the entire section by URL and paste it in the "Avatar URL" field. You can also take the web page URL of the picture and put it there; same thing.
Next, you will see Avatar width and Avatar height. Each of these can be a maximum of 100 pixels, so if your picture is basically square, you can make them both 100. You may have to play around with these numbers to get your picture looking right if it is odd-shaped.
Next is Personal text. Here you can type a Title or message to go below your Avatar on the message board, if desired.
Signatures are done basically the same as posting pictures on the message board if you choose to use a picture, but there is a size limit to help limit how much scrolling people have to do. You can have text as your signature with your name, or a popular quote, and/or a picture. BUT, the size of ALL of these COMBINED can not exceed the size limit of 200 pixels high by 500 pixels long.
To post a signature picture, Use the IMG line from your photo hosting site, and paste that in the signature box. It should be [ IMG] http:// wwwsite.blah blah.jpg [ /IMG]
This is the maximum size for signatures:
Your signature with text and picture should fit within this box. While the signature pictures are very creative and beautiful, the large ones create a lot of scrolling when they show up in repeated postings within a thread. Cutting down on the size of the pictures is the only fair way to help with this, and other boards have rules concerning this.
