Dunno if you can answer this question . . . or if I can even ask it without disclosing what a bungler I can be. I have sometimes kept the foal alert monitor open while I briefly left the house (for the barn). Twice now, the high alert has gone off in my (30-minute?) absence and crashed my system. Totally. The low alert does not seem to have this ill effect.
I reckon it's possible that the bellowing, galloping racket attracts the revenge of household pets, and they sabotage my keyboard in revenge. But I kinda doubt it. Is there anything about an untended high alert that might bring down a computer?
(Meanwhile, I'll try to remember to turn it off before leaving the house. Duh.)

Well, we have come home to the sound of hooves and whinnying as well. It has never crashed our computers though. What version of Java do you have? (You can find out quckly here: www.pchelpnetwork.com/java_test.php) It is possible that the alert monitor is conflicting with other Java/Javascript programs that are running on your computer. It is also possible that the sound hardware or drivers in your system are causing the problem. Check with your sound hardware manufacturer to make sure you have the latest drivers for your computer.

Thanks for the Java test site! How helpful! I have version 1.1.4. (What does that mean?) I'm not sure whether my sound drivers might be at fault, but I'm not going to bother wasting my time with (can I say this here?) Dell's tech people again. LOL! My system is creaking with age (it was one of the early OEM XP systems), and I am trying to wait until Vista's furballs are out before I replace this system. So, I'm putting up with a lot of quirkiness and tweaking at the limit of my ability and nerve. (I just uninstalled Intel's application accelerator, thinking it might be the villain in some of my recent blue-screen woes.)
Thanks for the advice. I was mostly wondering if maybe this problem had come up for others or perhaps you might know of some glitch in the foal alert. I sure do appreciate having you on board, Rich.

Thanks for the Java test site! How helpful! I have version 1.1.4. (What does that mean?) It means you could stand to upgrade! ;D java.com/en/download/index.jspThere's some other good stuff on the PC Help Network site as well, including free help. You can talk to technicians on line, and if no one's around, you can register and leave a trouble ticket (be as detailed about your problem as you can) and someone will get back to you.
