Are there any other cam owners out there that are running a cam off of their laptop? And if so what type of capture device are you running? Did you have to do anything to alter or configure the laptop to run the cam? Thanks in advance Brittany

bnd I'm not a cam owner, but I could have sworn I read that glenhill was running their cams on a laptop because it "crashed & burned" & she had to get a new one. I noticed on the first couple of pages of Essie's thread. Maybe you could contact her? Hope that helps.

A laptop may or may not be able to power a capture device. It depends on the laptop and the capture device. The older Dazzle DVC-80s do not use as much power as newer capture devices that can also encode the video. There is more electronics inside, and consequently, they use more power.
A desktop computer, on the other hand, can usually power two or three older devices like the DVC-80, and MAY be able to power two newer capture devices. If you have multiple cams, you may need a separately powered USB hub to get the required power for all devices.
In Glenhill's case, her laptop could run one older Dazzle, but not a second one. It also could not run a newer device she had (Hauppauge I think.)
Purchasing a separately powered USB hub solved the problem for her.
In the case of Tintagel Andalusians, her desktop computer could run 3 devices but not a 4th. The purchase of a hub and the connection two devices to the hub and two to the computer solved her problems.

Rich how would we know that is the problem? When we try to view the cam on the laptop all we get is the dreaded black screen....

Unfortunately, I know of no way to tell for sure. But most places will take the stuff back if you keep all the packaging and the receipt. You can even avoid the dreaded "restocking fee" if you just tell them "It wouldn't work with my computer." If they ask details, just keep saying "I don't know, it just wouldn't work with my computer." After a while they will give up and give you your money back.
