I went to bed Monday dozing off and at 11:30 I heard my mare scream and pounding hooves,I jumped straight out of bed,I thought coyotes or Fire. Then I heard yip, yip,I half pushed my hubby outta bed and told him get his gun coyotes are after the horses. He grabbed his boots and gun and headed out, chicken me I stayed in the house til I heard the shot.Well hubby came back in and says I don't know If I got one or not but I am surprised our neighbor didn't come out when he heard the shot.I said well its probably a good thing,Seeing as your just wearing your boots and underwear.Had to laugh at that one,Went out and checked the horses everyone is fine. But what I way to wake up I told hubby we are putting up 5 foot fencing this weekend.Just thought I would share pretty scary seeing as our horses are not far from the house.Mandyme2

Sounds like our house Mandy.........Only this happened with a wolf. State of Idaho has thought it was necessary to re-introduce the wolves back into the wild here in Idaho. But they are protected so if you shoot one you are in BIG DODO! If they are attacking your livestock you are NOT allowed to shoot them, you have to watch them eat your animal. The state will REFUND you on what you lost (SHEESH ya right!). Anyway about a month ago we let our red heeler out to go potty before bed and she FREAKED out (not like her). Dan went to the window and saw this HUGE looming shape coming toward our house and our dog. He grabbed his gun and was calling to our dog. He got our dogs in and this "shape" ran down toward our barn. He stopped right infront of my barn and Dan could not shoot because it was inline with the horse stalls (granted all he had was the light of the moon to see all this). Finally the shape came up toward the house again and he shot, this thing came right at Dan!!!! He shot again and it took off into the woods. He never got it but there is no doubt that it was a wolf. And upon talking to a good friend of ours apparently the state of Idaho has relocated some wolves to round lake which is about 10 miles east of us!!!!! The coyotes we have here have NEVER bothered our horses or our cows, but have taken our chickens, turkey and my goose. However my palo mare will have nothing to do with a dog in her pasture and will kill it. Good luck to you!

Man all of that sounds scary!!! I did have some coyotes chase our horse right through the fence (we had just gotten her that day and just had some electric fence strung up w/o electric to it) we found her a mile away after looking all day she was in the back part of a field, a little shake of the feed can and she came right to us. Anyway I don't agree with the wolf law. that is awful!! The way I see it is if your livestock is in danger SHOOT!!!! I wonder what the law would do if a wolf killed a horse worth BIG BUCKS?? They would probally try to make excuses not to pay. Well let anything danger my animals..............wait a minute I don't own a gun since my husband sold it ( I shot it too well he said...lol) also Kevin was shooting a 9mm and the bullet got stuck and the next bullet made the gun explode. Hit Kevin right between the eyes I had some of that glue and glued it shut since he wouldn't go to the hospital. Of course this is after I got home........... We still have that gun for a conversation piece...........LOL

Mandy, anymore wolf sightings? I hope not but I feel like this...I would shoot the wolf if I had to and make sure I kept my mouth shut about it and bury it real quick! I hate killing an animal but you have to keep your horses safe and yourselves also. And its sad for the wolves too. They are only doing what they know to do.

A ferral cat or dog is just a domestic cat or dog gone wild (I'm pretty sure)

No more coyotes here yet.But it is Legal too shoot coyotes all year long here in Wisconsin if they are harming livestock,The only exception is during deer hunting season.Yes Feral cats are running rampart around these parts,Feral cats and dogs are domesticated animals that owners may have let loose then they breed. Will let you all know if Hubby goes huntin agin in his underwear lol.Mandyme2

Coyotes you can shoot as they are not an endagered species. The wolves are on the endangered list so you can't. Shooting them and burring them is a good way BUT if they are radio collared once the animal has no pulse the collar sends off a different signal to alert that it is dead. Most are collared around here. But no thank God we have not had anymore wolf sightings just coyote here.

Well score one for the home team!!! We have been loosing chickens left and right out here and we had a feeling it was a coyote yet we couldn't catch it. Well this morning about 5am I hear the chickens freaking out, I sat up in bed and they progessively got worse screaming. I looked out the window to see a coyote chasing down one of our black hens. I smacked my hubby and said get your gun there is a coyote out there.. He shot out of bed like something bit him in the butt and ended up getting the coyote from the house! Granted the coyote did get our one hen but hopefully this was the "brave" one that has been coming back. Hopefully we won't have a coyote sighting for awhile now!

Gosh I hope not. As a kid we didn't have many ticks on us because of chickens.
On the other hand I won't eat eggs unless they are cooked with something. I ate too many as a kid and seen too many chicks that was suposed to be breakfast..................lol
I haven't told my kids about that though they love eggs. I would hate to spoil their breakfast.
