Perthes Disease is most common in children from 2-13. It is also WAY more common in boys! Perthes is a temporary loss of blood supply to the hip. This causes the femoral head to die. It becomes very irritated and inflammed. Treatments vary. You want to reduce the swelling or inflammation in the hip joint. It is not desirable for the child to walk on a stiff hip. This may promote contracture of muscle and possibly flattening of the femoral head. To help restore range of motion, physical therapy, ambulation with crutches, or bed rest in traction may be needed.
