Howdie all, quick question:
What dosage of oxytocin do you give if a mare is having trouble passing her placenta? I've been told numerous different thigns by vets, and am curious what everyone else does.
Thanks! Allison

In the few cases we have had, we gave a low dose of 1cc and it worked well. But on the worst case you would want to delute about 20IU into a small saline bag and do a slow drip (vets doing).

Both times I've done this this season, we gave 5cc and repeated every hour as needed until the placenta was passed (that was up to 4 doses but neither went that far) The repeat is necessary because the oxytocin only stays in the system for a short time. (45 minutes to an hour depending on who you talk to)
