Since this is my first foal, im wondering about the way the hooves are supposed to look. Since birth, he has looked like his toes were long and he was on his heel. I looked at them again last night and he seems to look like he is getting run down heels. The bulbs look a little raw. Something just doesnt look right to me. Who would be the best person. The Vet or the Farrier? Ill get some pictures of them. Ive owned young horses (3 months old) and dont remember their hooves looking that way.

With my foals I always have my farrier out and just rasp the toes or edges off when I have my mare done. It makes sure they are growing correctly and they can correct any conformational problems now. Farriers are specialized in their field (I know you know this but...), my farrier gets so upset when a vet TELLS him what to do. Its like going to the doctor and your dr telling your dentist how to pull your teeth!!! When I have to get a vet involved with my horses feet, I always have my farrier present so they can DISCUSS what to do next. I would personally give your farrier a call and see if he can fix whats going on! Good Luck!

I had the farrier out today, and he said his toes were really long and trimmed him. You would think the colt was an old pro. He did soooo good. I was very proud of him and myself for teaching him to pick up his feet and hold them up. That is my biggest quirk. A horse who wont pick up their feet, or they arent taught to pull the back legs out. My friend had a horse that she never did that with and she was heck for the farrier to do.

My broodmare is that way, she freaks if you take her hoof out to the front. She says that is just not natural LOL!
