I was wanting some information as to how to get my filly broke to lead? She is now used to the halter and doesn't mind wearing it. She doesn't really like it being grabbed and I don't want her to think that I am being mean to her but I was wondering how to lead her.

I've seen some people but a rope behind the foals behind, so instead of pulling from the halter, you're actually encouraging it to move forward because it wants to move away from the pressure on it's rump.

With my foals I always try to have two people me and a helper. When I first teaching a foal to lead I will have someone lead the dam and of course the foal will follow, but I have a leadrope on my foal so the foal gets used to walking beside me on a leadrope but I am not asking anything of the foal yet. Now if the foal does try to baulk or pull back then I will take soft cotton lead rop and put it behind his rump. I will ask for forward motion from the halter and if they hesitate I will put a small amount of pressure on the butt rope. This has worked well with all my foals, however I teach leading at a pretty young age when I know the foal can't win! Remember take it really slow, steady and consistant. Lessons involving foals should be kept as short as possible but still able to end on a good note...
