Spanish Arabians are the Rarest of the main arabian bloodgroups (the others being Polish,Egyptian, Crabbet, Russian, Desert and the mix here is called Domestic or American..there are some more subgroups).
Spanish Arabians originate from less than 40 idividuals imported into Spain in the early 1900s. Spain actually has one of the earliest recorded stud books.
The Spanish arabian has its roots in Desert, Polish, and Crabbet stock. The original Spanish stock was owned by the YM(Spanish Military). And were bred to very strict standards. Thus creating a very Homogenious(sp) gene pool. Spanish are very easy to pick out from a crowd. Their large black eyes, compact bodies, and very correct solid frames, along with a gentle disposition and a highly smart and trainable mind often make them hard to forget.
The available breeding population in the US, once numbered close to 2000. Currently, the number in the US hovers around 500-700 breeding individuals, if we are lucky. Many people do not realize how rare the Straight Spanish actually are. Because such notables as Magnum Psyche and El Shaklan are 50% Spanish through their dams. The Straight Spanish are often used in Hybred or Spanish outcross programs, thus limiting their usage in Straight Spanish breeding programs.
Our farm currently has 57 Straight Spanish (getting ready to do some massive downsizing). And breed about 10 mares per year. This is more than any Straight Spanish program in the US. Most of our sales go to first-time Spanish owners and very often first-time Arabian owners.
I hope you will stop in and learn more about these wonderful horses.
