Wendi:
Forgive me if you don't own Banner, but after browsing some posts I think it is you that owns her.
I was just wondering, being new to pregnant mares, if there's a time when a mare might be induced if she goes too long?
I know in humans the placenta starts to break down and not be as nourshing to the baby. Don't know if it's the same for mares or not.
By the way, she's just adorable. Every night when I check in on her she's usually standing in the same spot looking so cute.
Can't wait to see her baby and best wishes on the foaling!

They will some time induce, but most vets will not. Due to sometimes the foal is not ready. I think they will only induce if the mare or foal is not doing well. Also with induction the mare can red bad, have a distosha, where the foal in not in the right place, or have a mare that just spits the foal out, without contracting for very long, and then the foal will have to much fluid in its lungs.

I've been told of horses going 406 days and 414 days, so I guess the vets don't like to induce if the mare is not in distress. The vet was actually out today and said Banner is fine... when she's ready it will drop. She has a full bag and a tail like wet spaghetti, for lack of a better description, so I'd say its up to her now. I thought I might have seen a drop of wax on one teat earlier -- but my only other mares last year didn't wax up so I'm not sure what it looks like in person. It fell off when I wiped the teat. Will wax do that?? Maybe the full moon tonight will be the inspiration she needs!!! Just hoping for a healthy foal and uneventful birth. Thank you everybody for your continued concern about Miss Banner.

Hi Wendi....yep, wax will fall off, sometimes to come back again, sometimes not...each mare is different. I've even seen some mares show no signs of wax at all, prior to foaling. Sounds like Banner may just give in and show that baby sooner rather than later!!
