Now that we've replaced the fried motherboard on our new computer (1 day old and had major meltdown) and Jimbo has gotten me up and running again, I've put our next mare on cam. She is another rescue, brought here about 2 months ago from the slaughter feedlot, and looks to be due in about another month. She is beginning early udder changes and since I have no history on her I now have her on cam so I can easily monitor from BED!! LOL. I much prefer rolling over to getting up to check on these still a ways off mares! Muffin is an aged mare, approx 20 years old, in foal to an appaloosa stallion. That much we know. I have seen pictures of him and if I can figure out how, I'll post a pic of him for all to see. Thanks for watching us and cheering on our wonderful mares! Vicki

Glad to hear that you are a rescuer! Linda(our friend that our mares will be going to stud) rescued three mares that are in foal and are extremely underweight. She is a really awesome person and by the sound of it you are too!
Good luck with the mare!
BTW, you live in Oakdale Ca., and I live in Oakdale, TN... LOL ;D!

The rescueing I've done has been so rewarding. These horses have paid me back many times over for what I've done.

I'm glad too that you have rescued her. I pray that she's not a problem for you as I know that some of the ones that end up at slaughter are there because of attitude issues.
20 years old ...God was truly looking out for her when you found her. I pray for a very easy foaling for her.
It's wonderful that you rescued her, but I applaud you even more for going to the place that you bought her from. It would take more courage than I could ever muster to do that, not to mention that I would want to come home with everyone one of them. So very sad....
GOD BLESS YOU for looking after her and giving her a loving home to end her days in.

Thanks Heather. You know it seems to be the most common thought that the horses sent to slaughter are injured/difficult/sick. We've found that for the most part those things just aren't true. So many of the horses are just like what I would buy for myself. For some reason these seem to have fallen on owners hard times or are getting older and taking more to keep up. Or have just become inconvenient for the owner. Its hard to know just why they have ended up there. On the lot of course they are agitated or sick. They have been dumped into a strange environment with all of these other horses and there is no set pecking order. Some are sick, but many come healthy to the lot (and there get exposed to the nastiest of illnesses). Some have never had the most basic of health care. I have one that had never had teeth floated. She should never have been bred as she has the poorest confirmation (back there) and ended up with placentitis and lost her lovely foal. She was skinny and looked older than her 20 years. With floating and senior care she looks like a young horse. You'd never know she was 20. We are constantly amazed at the horses that come through. Its so very sad to see the young and untrained horses that end here. Ahh, enuf of my soapbox. Can you tell I love doing this? Wish it was something that wasn't necessary. Vicki

I wish I had a big enough place, and I'd go and rescue some horses! It is good to have people like you in the world to save even just a few horses. My friend saved six from one farm. It really adds up!
Still hoping you have a safe foaling!

To answer that question, I just adopted another pregnant mare who will be coming home asap, as she is heavy in foal :-( I had to choose from 3 different ones, and starlit will be the easiest to re-home when she is ready to wean. Be looking for her the first of next month, she may beat Muffin!! In all I now currently have 3 mares, two are in foal, one lost her foal, and one mare/foal additionally who belongs to another rescue friend. As soon as I evaluate and rehome one of the mares I will be looking for another to bring home. You can check out my newest mare at CBER. Think I have a link to the rescue on my personal page. Thanks for you interest!! The hard part is letting them go when I find the right home. These mares have really blessed me and weaseled their way into my heart/home.

This is muffin's udder this morning. I think I'll be putting Starlit in her stall so I can watch her on cam....I think she is closer to foaling. I'll provide pics of both later today. Thanks for watching!

Starlit has arrived safe and sound. Thanks for all the positive energy sent her way. She is very thin, much more so than I like a term mare to be,so we will be working on feeding her up. She appears to be dropped, she has waxed, but her udder looks to have regressed a bit with the long ride home. I'll be giving her a couple hours to settle in and then will be doing some clean up on her. She is currently on cam.
