Well she went 351 days from the last breeding date, but it was worth the wait! I turned on the TV(cam in stall) at 1:40am to see Cookie laying down. Then all of a sudden a little foal went running around her ! My husband & I run out to the barn bare footed to check Cookie out. She had not even passed the placenta yet, but wasn't in any real pain or stress. We discovered a cute red & white paint colt! This morning both are fine & doing well
His name will be either; Golden's Fire Fly or Lightening Bug
here are the links for the first pictures, enjoy ;D
This little guy is already nibbling at the hay, and I just caught him with his nose in the water bucket, and he is only 12 hours old! He is spitting the hay out of course, wow he is sooooo cute!
Pictures at 12 hours old
<UPDATE>
Well I knew there was a problem when he was 12 hours old. Cookie had NO milk Just the clear sticky stuff. He wasn't acting right either. I gave her until the next morning, and still no milk. Meanwhile over the night I had contacted Heather, and she replied "Call the Vet !"
So this morning our wonderful Dr. Zieger came out and pulled blood from Fire Fly and did the snap test to see if he had gotten the antibodies from Cookie. Meanwhile I gave Cookie the paste to bring in her milk, she will get it for 4 days in a row. The test showed that he had an 800, right on the line. (800 & over, no plasma transfusion needed) So The Vet sedated Fire fly, IV'd fluids into him, and Calcium. Then stomach tubed and gave him some 7oz+ of Foal Lac Milk into him. Then he got a shot of penicillin.
Cookie was VERY upset during this at first, but I calmed her down, and she watched everything with great interest! ;D
So, I am now supplementing Fire Fly every two hours with the Foal Lac Milk, and he is progressively taking more & more. The last feeding he took 6oz He continues to nurse on Cookie also. We hold the bottle next to her udder so he associates the milk with her. (We don't get to BE the momma ) He has also started to show signs of in-proved energy. We had to give him an enema, and it worked. Cheyenne my 10 yo daughter thought the action the enema did to Fire Fly was too funny
SO here we are, an hour from the next feeding, then I get to sleep, and he should be really hungry in the morning. Marcus took this picture after the Vet left.
