Seems to me that there is a bit of a possession issue. Maybe keep them locked up and fed seperately? Some horses just get possesive around feeding time.... has it ever happened before?

Could be food aggression. Are they fed together?

JJ, I want you to BE CAR FULL!! Don't get caught in the middle of these two mares fighting over their feed buckets. The suggestion to separate them, then feed them is correct. I can tell you that loose aggressive horses & feed buckets is a dangerous situation for you to be in. When I was younger, I was kicked in the back side when out in the pasture trying to catch one up with a bucket. A large gelding wheeled & kicked me! I "bit the dirt" literally. Please be careful, and before you even bring out the buckets, separate them. And remember,YOU are their boss, and make those two mare behave when you are handling them! If you can't separate them, then feed them through the fence. You stay on the outside. I have taught my horses to respect my space, and go & stand where I hang their buckets. But I am the 'Boss Mare', and I also carried a whip in with me when I was training them to do this, and would stand out there to insure that no one left their bucket to steal another's food. Good Luck! ;D
