Hi a friends mare foaled this afternoon around 3:00 and still hasnt passed her afterbirth,,,,how long should it take??

It should only take a couple of hours. She's in jeopardy of getting an infection. The owner needs to contact a vet.....in my opinion!
We had a mare retain a placenta for over 24 hours (pew); but she was getting flushed, getting oxytocin shots and monitored by our vet. It finally came out on it's own, but could have been a big problem.
That mare remained on antibiotics for a couple days after....
