these are pictures of my horse Summer. She is an 11 year old paint mare. At the moment she is ridable but barely rideable. The other day her eye swelled up so bad it is swollen shut. Today it got worse and we had the vet come out. Turns out its a cornea ulcer. So since it bugs her i try not to ride her b/c i don't want her to be uncomfortable. And the vet said if its not healed completly by friday she has to scrap my horses eye to try to get and scar tissue out. I posted this msg a couple of days ago on the photos page. Two days later i posted another one saying her eye is getting better. Well i talked to the owner of the barn last night and she said that my mares eye was a little worse. She said that her eye seems to be runny alot. ( ) But the vet is coming today to see how its healing so hopefully everything is okay.

Corneal ulcers are a fairly common occurrence and they've been far too common in my own experience. I've cleared mine up (not mine personally - the ones on the horses) using a vet-prescribed combination of saline irrigations along with opthamalic antibiotic and serum. The routine is no fun (4X/day working on an eyeball that is not ideally situated for applying medications . . . with a horse who is not particularly keen to cooperate), but it has worked for me in every case. Your vet's instructions should, of course, supersede mine. Good luck with your mare!

The vet came today at around 5 o'clock. She said my horses eye is worse. She actually had to scrape the eyeball. She said we can not ride her until it gets better. The worst news though was that if her eye forms a bubble or starts turing like a coludy- brown color we have to rush her to the vet hospital because that means that her eye is one layer away from rupturing. The vet said that if it ruptures she will go blind in that eye.
So PLEASE pray that she gets better. She is my baby, she was the first horse i had and i have now had her for 7 years. SO PLEASE PRAY FOR HER.

Praying for your mare to be ok. I know what you are dealing with as our mare has had an ulcer on the eye as well. Actually she had 2 ulcers. It was caused by a piece of chaff that got in the eye overnight and rubbed. Our vet advised putting her in a darkened stall and not taking her out in the sun till it healed. He also prescribed antibiotics in the form of an ointment that we had to put in the eye and also saline irrigation several times a day. It took a couple of weeks but it healed with no ill effects. She went on to win the pony club state eventing title only 3 months later.

You can also use a fly mask to keep light out of the eye. Apply some duct tape to the side that covers the injured eye. Be neat about it - you don't want tackiness or fumes or bunching to trouble the eye further.

sending prayers for your mare to heal soon. Now DO NOT ride her until she is 100% healed. You do not want to take the chance of even a piece of dirt or even the wind carries gunk getting her eye. You'll have a Lifetime to ride her do NOT rush riding her now. Eye injuries are not something you want to mess with.Worry about taking care of your mare and xtra loving time. And WAIT on the riding.
