I have a big problem. February 27 had the vet in for a check up, she felt the foal move inside CC. Now she is so overdue I brought the vet back in and she said she cant find the foal. CC still shows every sign of being pregnant. She is bagged up, big belly still. They did a blood test but she said it would be 3 weeks for results. Should I give up hope or could the vet have just missed the foal? She is about 4 weeks late

Get another vet out. I don't know anything about equine false pregnancy - my mare was well and truly pregnant every time and once tried twins. But the vet thought there was a foal. So I'd figure there should still be one unless the appearance the mare has changed. I'd get a different vet out and inquire about ultrasound or other options.

Thanks I guess I do need a second opinion. I am just so afraid of all the invasive procedures hurting the foal(if there is one in there) I cant see her aborting and still looking pregnant. Wishfull thinkin on my part I guess.

A rectal exam or ultrasound by a qualified vet is hardly likely to injure a foal. They do it all the time. Get an answer. Us folks here online can only guess, or get out the ouija board. A good vet ought to be able to give you an answer, and CERTAINLY ought to be able to come up with a better solution than a 3-week blood test.

If you get another vet out to palpitate her if she is indeed still prego it may bring the labor on,What did the vet do?Did she do a rectal?If the vet didn't there is a good chance its still there cause babies don't move all the time,best of luck let us know what happens.MandyMe2

I did get another vet to come in and check CC. The news wasnt good. Looks like sometime in the last month she has lost the foal. I dont know if anyone is familar with the West Nile Virus shot, but I could really use some input. I was told that this shot wouldnt hurt the foal. It was givin to her Feb 27 and now the foal has died. Has anyone else had a problem. This was my first foal and I am heart broken. I didnt see any sign of the foal in pasture or on her. The vet is coming to do an altra sound to see if the foal has mumified inside because she is still milked up and looks very pregnant, but the blood test said she isnt in foal.

1st off I am so sorry:( (HUGS))) You should have found a fetus at that age of gestations so that is strange.. as for West Nile vacine I have given it since it came out,Not 1 reaction,all Foals born perfect:) and all I talk to have also had no problems. I knowwe look to what we did or did'nt do when something happens:( But My Experience with West Nile Vacine has been "no problems" and my Vet also has never lost a foal to what she belives is the WN vacine..and Bridget does everything To perfection....she will give you every scenerio of WHAT COULD Happen..BUT with the WN Vac she has no qualms. Hopefully this Vet can unravel some of it.......let us know what the vet says or finds

My vet said that a mare should be vaccinated against West Nile Virus, ideally 30 before foaling date to ensure that the foal is also covered, a foal born to a mare not vaccinated is at great risk, and require something like 5 shots before the age of 6-8 months to be protected. We lost a horse last summer to WN, and let me tell you...........It was not fun!!!! Absolutely heart breaking, as it attacks the spinal column, and these horses just reel and crash to the ground, out of control.....thrashing ...... literally digging their own grave..........it is HORRIBLE. Vaccinate!

We don't give West Nile and we don't recommend it for Minis. Not sure how it works with the big horses, but it's caused abortion, absorbtions, sterility and blindness in several horses that I know! And it was all at the same time - right after the shot!
I won't take a change and give it - it's just not worth the risk.
I'm so sorry for your loss...but I am perplexed as to why your mare is still "big".......seems to me that she would have shown that she lost the foal by dropping weight or looking caved in..... I'm confused on this one.

I'm so sorry to hear about the foal. I'm by no means an expert with breeding horses, so I don't have any suggestions. {{{HUG}}}

So sorry to hear of the loss of your foal , and I hope that your mare is okay..... Please keep us posted.
I personally have not given the West Nile Shot to any of my horses yet, and after reading what it can potentially do to horses, I probably will not ever give it! Hopefully you can rebreed your mare next season, and get your foal the next year.
