I found this mare on a classifieds site just a week or two ago. It's a 14 year old Arabain mare that has an old injury. She broke her leg a few years ago and it was never treated and she now has a contracted tendon and can't put her foot down. The mare is at a "rescue" right now but I think they are doing more harm then good. I am trying to get 2006 pictures from the owner. Here is an Email I got back from the owner... Hi Lindsey, I have had Serena for about a year and a half now. She is not in any pain at all, she just can't put the leg down. I have talked to several vets about her leg, but I can not afford to take her in at this time. They all tell me that they need to see her, take x-rays, etc.......and my finances have suddenly been reduced. I had every intention of taking her in but things just didn't work the way I wanted them to. I have done weight therapy with her, and gotten the leg down far enough to touch the toe down to the ground, but I can't get it to draw forward enough to sit the foot down correctly. I have let her rest over the winter and this spring. She does fine as a pasture mate right now, except the pasture can not be very big because she uses all her energy to get around and if she has to go very far, she tends to loose weight. She has gained about 150 puonds sense I've had her. She gets fed twice daily with a 14% feed, joint supplement, and fat supplement. She is a real sweet mare, and she just needs a little more help than I can give her right now. I just want her to go to a loving home, and I can't bear to put her down as she is not in any pain, and gets around just fine. You can go to my website to see pics of her and read more about her. The link is below my signature. Please email back or call me if you think you would like to have her! Here is the webpage uncluding pictures... kgmbluebarranch.tripod.com/id13.htmlWe have room to take her but I am not ready to care for her, anyone who can take her or help get her to a real rescue, you can email her at equines4me@isp.com or my at Golden_Lover92@yahoo.com This mare needs some help. I have people who would be willing to help put together a fund raiser to get the needed money for a vet trip.

It sounds to me like the mare is in a "real" rescue right now. She has feed, shelter, and is in no pain. That counts. She is not in dire straits. There are many many more desperate animals out there. Sure, some rehab would be nice. But the point is that she is not suffering - she'll never be a sound animal again, no matter how much money you throw at her. So there's no need to be insulting to the people who have put so much time and trouble into improving her situation. And CERTAINLY no reason to be so snobby as to claim they are doing more harm than good! How can you POSSIBLY claim she's being harmed by the people who have made her life so much better? You ought to be ashamed.

I dont mean to rain on any parades either. But i am a private animal rescuer, of both the big and small. It seems to me that this person is doing the best they can for this mare, with the resources they have. And that their interest is in the best for hte animal, which is what rescueing is about. She has used weight therapy, gotten rid of rain rot, put some weight on her and solved some of her trust issues. She clearly cares about the horse, and is only going to adopt her out to a home that has as much or more time for her and the funds to fix her disability.
I dont see where the harm is at?

I have an idea lindseyks!! Since you already have people willing to help with a fundraiser for this horse that you AREN'T ready to take care of...why not go ahead with the fundraiser and send the money to the lady that IS taking care of the horse, but doesnt have the resources for the x-rays!

MaryKansas had an excellent idea ;D It does also sound that the horse is getting pretty good care considering her condition.
Years ago, around 1973, I saw a similar contracted condition on a younger animal. The vet came out and did the surgery on the horses leg, put on the cast etc. After the cast came off, it seemed that the horse was alright at first, but then the tendon contracted again, and he eventually had to be destroyed
So sometimes just doing our best IS enough, and is all that is supposed to be done

Mary what a great idea. Lindseyks l agree with the others on this post, give the donations to the lady that is already doing her best for this mare as she obviously loves the horse and is already doing all she can. Sometimes things are best left to Mother Nature and not surgery.

Hey Lindsey, you know me Just curious why you think the rescue is doing more harm than good? Maybe they told you something privately that isn't posted on that website link you provided?

Is there something we can do here to help? Can we pull together some type of fund raiser?
I honestly don't have the time to do it, but you're welcome to use this site as a venue.

Hi everyone. My name is Carrie and I'm new here obviously. I've been "visiting" here for a couple weeks. I would like to share a little something that has been on my heart regarding this girl and this rescue mare. I have been himming/hawing on it, trying to decide if I really want to stick my neck out in the danger zone and I have decided yes I will. I was really disappointed to see the reception this girl got, when she was just trying to let us all know about this mare. I want to say first that I scoured this rescue's website looking for something that may solidify the claim that this may not be a "real rescue". But I couldn't find anything. And I'd like to say that yes it does look like the lady is doing all she can for this mare. (ie: food, love, vet care, etc.) But what I'd like to address is the fact that lindseyks is 14 yrs. old. Try to think back to when you were that age. Didn't you want to go thru hell and high water to "save all the little ponies"? I know I did. Someone said in a reply that she should be "ashamed". I'm honestly quite disappointed in the way she was replied too. The girl said she had the room to take the mare but wasn't ready to care for her and the extent of her injuries. How many of you would be ready for such an undertaking at the ripe old age of 14??!! As I stated before, I am new here, I'm not "one of the crowd", and yes I'm ready for the gouillotine. But I feel the only ones who should be "ashamed" are the one who attacked her like a pack of wild dogs. She wanted to get the word out and maybe someone would reach out to this mare. People got snotty and catty, even sarcastic, which I feel was uncalled for. I guess that's all I have to say. I suppose I'm next to get scolded. You will also notice that lindsey joined this site in very recently, and this was her first post, and prob. her last. The same will prob go for me. Even though I just joined here, I'd like to extend my apology to lindseyks for the way her post was handled. Maybe some of you should do the same. Thanks for your time, Carrie

Carrie...first off, I'd like to welcome you to mare stare!! Regardless of your first impressions, this is a really nice place to hang out and gather information!! My concern is this: There is a lady doing all she can, given her financial situation, for a horse, and trying to find it a good home when along comes a 14 year old girl who feigns interest, but instead, posts on a message board that the horse is being harmed.
I'm a mother of teenagers, and let me tell you...at 14 years old, they know exactly what they are doing, so age does not play a factor in this as far as I'm concerned. If Lindsey wants to help this horse "come hell or high water" and has people lined up for a fundraiser, then she can send the money to the lady that is taking care of the horse now, as I originally suggested, and am not ashamed to say again!!
Now, with that all said, you must understand that with the amount of people that post here, not everyone will agree with everything all the time, but please dont let that be a deterrent from posting here and joining in on other topics!

Carrie, I try NOT to hurt anyones feelings no matter what age they are, and what their concerns. I also believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Unfortunately there are more horses out there that need rescuing that will ever been seen or known about That breaks my heart. I am glad that this particular mare is at least getting food & some sort of therapy for her old injury. Yes Lindsey has a right to be concerned about the horse, but at 14 maybe a little young & a little inexperienced & a little too fast to make a judgment call like that? I have seen horses look like the walking dead before, and I had to turn away because of the situation. It is NEVER easy to see a noble horses suffer if we think that we can do better for them. Should Lindsey be ashamed, personally I don't think so, but I do not know if she is the type to jump to conclusions too fast either So Carrie, if you want to cut Lindsey some slack, do it for others also Thats a sure way to turn the tides your way Admittedly we can not save them all It makes me sick, but I do know that I do the very best that I can by the horses that I own and have control over
I hope that I didn't use too many emotion faces ;D

I don't know if Lindsey jumped to conclusions or not but let's give her credit for caring and for being mature enough to admit to not being able to care for this mare. I think the fundraising idea is a great idea. It would be best to send the money to the mare's caretaker. She seems to love her and has taken very good care of her.
