As some of you know, I have been looking at a mare to purchase, and I just received more pictures of her tonight. She is a beautiful sorrel with a flaxen mane and tail...looks to be very healthy and kid friendly!! I like that!! lol My question is, her hooves are so grown out (owner said last farrier visit was in January) that in the pictures, it looks like her hooves are straight out in front of her and she looks to be leaning back into her ....cant think of the proper term right now...but would be the equivalent to our ankles. Can this cause permanent damage after being seen by a farrier? Can it cause lameness? I dont feel comfortable posting her picture here without the owners permission...but any input would be greatly appreciated!! I'm a novice at this and need all the help I can get!! Thanks!!

She may just be needing a good trim, all though in the winter months hoof growth slows down considerably. So they shouldn't be all that bad from Jan. Long low pasterns and under run heels can cause hooves like you described.
Worse case scenario the mare could have been foundered before.
If you are inexperenced (a novice), and are worried about lamness issues, why not have her vet checked before you buy? A vet or trusted farrier can assess the hooves, and also do flextion tests on her for soundness. Better safe than sorry
Hope this helps, Good Luck, and keep us posted ;D
