I have a 14hh large pony Paint cross mare. She is a more solid build and is only 5 years old. We want to breed her soon and we are wondering if breeding her to a Warmblood or Thoroughbred wouldbe too much. We wouldn't breed to a big stallion just regular sized, 16.2hh. Would this be too big for her 1st foal?

My vet informed me that studies have been done crossing Shetlands to Shires, and the size of the mare determines the birth size of the foal. My 15.1 QH mare had no trouble when I bred her to a 17.2 Belgian. Her son is a HOUSE but only about 15.2. Weighs right about 1500 pounds. We bred him to a 12.2 pony mare twice, and had lovely fillies that ended up very large ponies. Certainly when I was a kid and showing hunter ponies people were always breeding 12.2ish ponies to TB stallions hoping to get elegant large ponies. So I'd go for it. I would also monitor her carefully and try to be there in case of shoulder lock at birth, which was the only thing my vet seemed concerned about. Those are big shoulders if they aren't offset by one foot way in front of the other. Of course, that was for a DRAFT cross. I doubt it would be a concern for a TB cross.

I have read the same study that Erika's vet has and I would have to agree that it wouldn't matter!

I crossed my 13.2 hand mare to a 16.3hand warmblood stallion. The foal was pony size when born, but it was all legs. She is now 15.3, I would not worrier about the cross. Again the foal will only grow as big as the mare will allowed.

I think I'm gonna go for a WB then. Maybe something along the lines of Popeye K...maybe his Canadian bred son Sailor's Spirit. We'll have to see.

I don't know abou the $2500 breeding fee though, I'll have to double check with my mom who holds the money! We'll have to see. If not I'm going for a pony, Rowfantina Grenadier. He is full brothers to a well known deceased Small Pony Hunter in Ontario, Rowfantina Collage. He's a small 11.3hh so it will hopefully grow to remain a medium or small pony. www.rowfantinacollage.com Gren looks pretty much the same.
