Ok i went to check on my mare before i came to work today, and she hasn't "dropped" yet but her bag has been extremely full for the past four days and now i believe we have wax! And her private area has defiantly stretched and relaxed the past 24 hours. The vet is coming out sometime before noon today to to give her last set of shots (she isn't due until June 15) and she is going to go ahead and check her over while she is there. This is getting so exciting. Canya will probably be on of these mares that show all the signs, that you expect to see a baby soon and she ends up holding it in until after June15 and into July! What are the key signs i need to be looking for to let me know that foaling is within days to hours. This is the first time i have breed my mare so it is all kind of new. I have read thousands of things and i am sure that what everyone one her tells me is something i have already read, but any advice would be great. She is a first time mom-to-be as well and i know they can play tricks on you. Thanks for any help!

The best advise that I can give you is......try not to get too many grey hairs from worrying while you are waiting Keep us posted at your mare progress

Hi Canya, I'm not a breeder...just a mare starer... ...Don't know if info I have could be of help, but here goes... ..I've heard that the 'waxing' you describe is known to happen between 6-48 hours before foaling...a maiden mare, of course, could be more or less time. The mares I have watched get into nervous pacing, biting or sometimes trying to kick at sides, tail lifting and swishing, stretching and kind of dancing...also some appear to be sweating, though difficult to tell on some cams. Right before they seem to urinate frequently and lay down and get up several times.....And pretty much, that's all I know about the subject.. ;D......http://www.roadsend.org/farm/mares/sophie/sophiewatch2003.htm is a great site...I'm not good at posting links, maybe it could be copied over or something---I'm not computer literate either.. Got that link from "Critter Country message board.....many other really good links posted there...Hope some of this will be useful and keep us posted on Canya!..

Hi Canya, I can only tell you what my mare did..........About 10 days before she foaled, she had crystals forming on the ends of her teats, (I thought this was waxing) Her milk first clear, turned white, even dripped for 5 days before she foaled. Two days before, she really hollowed out above her flanks, and the next day, her milk became sticky. When it dripped, it covered her legs and the dirt stuck to them! Very exciting waiting for the event, and I hope you don't miss it. Good luck, and I love your pics!
