My hay man has two geldings his family no longer does anything with. They are half brothers. The eldest is 20, and is a really handsome red bay Doc Bar horse. The younger is 19, a funky roan. Older is easy keeper. Younger is a little bit harder. He introduced me to them today, and I got the impression he would sell them really really cheap or possibly even give them to the right person... and that he might be thinking that person was me.
I've got one 11 year old who wasn't gelded until 6 and has no mileage on him, a 9 month old, and a nasty pony we need to send back to the auction. My other gelding is on loan to a friend as a school horse. Thing is, I NEED two good solid riding horses, one for me, and one for a friend, to get me back to riding regularly. It's not as much fun alone, and my 11 yo is a dingdong going down the road by himself. Ideally I'd be able to pony him beside something sensible. Which HIS brother (the one on loan) is otherwise, but they egg each other on with silliness when together.
I do NOT need two more mouths to feed.
But they are sooooooooo tempting...

erikasbackyard, ....dont envy you having to make a decision like that but...... it sure sounds like they might be useful to you if they are sound and sane.. if the nasty pony goes .....well you know how it all goes .. nuh not saying anymore or l'll get the blame if you do get them ;D

If only the hay man came with them... ;-)
I would imagine that if they got to be too much for me I could give them back to him. He has plenty of land around here. I might even be able to work some good deal with him to pasture my whole crew for the summer, which would be ideal.

Oh, no! The extremely capable teenage student of a friend of mine called back to say she would really like to borrow my 11 yo greenie! This would be so excellent for Rowdy, to get the mileage on him. So. NOW I will have no riding beasts at all until Hope comes home for a couple months over the winter. I reckon I'll discuss the matter further with my hay man when I see him this week.
