Grab the side of their lip, lift it up and stick the end of the wormer in the part where there is no teeth. It is where the bit sits. Having a hand over the nose is the easiest way to keep the horse's head in the right position.

I often play with their mouths, inserting my fingers in to the side (where the bit sits) just to get them used to things and I also pull their tongues out sideways and hold it just for good measure. (No teeth there) Worming is alot easier on these horses, that are used to this task. I always stand to the side of them, and insert my fingers first, ( to show them nothing bad is going to happen) then the wormer into the corner of the mouth, towards the back, Squeeze the trigger, and Wallahhhhhhhhhh. Done. Don't wave it around in front of the face or nose, might cause a reaction.......and it gets easier each time!

You aren't the only one. My 10 yo daughter gets so freaked out , she doesn't want to use her thumb in the corner of the mouth for bitting up her pony She tries to con me into bridling for her every time she rides

I always hold my mares head up a little bit after I put it in so she doesn't spit so much out

Crazyhorse there's another reason you need to get used to putting your fingers in your horse's mouth. You should check your horse's back teeth from time to time. The molars sometimes get sharp points which irritates the cheeks and can be quite painful. This can lead to infection and weight lost because they can't chew their food properly. To check this you slide your finger along the cheek and feel the side of the molars. If you check once in a while you will be able to catch this before it gets bad. Then your vet can float (file) the teeth for you. Your horse will not bite you. She will move her jaw and tongue around but believe me she does not want to bite you. Us humans don't taste too good.

Just rap your arm around your mares head between the eyes & nostril (like a hug), with the other hand insert to end of the wormer into the corner of her mouth, same place the bit goes................. You CAN do it! ;D Just don't get knocked in the head doing this
