Okay, so it's not perfect yet - but I came up with the solution to the over bright light that caused a whiteout any time we were outside.
Sunglasses.
I have taped a pair of sunglasses over the camera so that one lens is over the cam lens. Crude, but cheap and effective. Just fyi, in case anybody else has the same difficulty.
And now of course the puppies are sound asleep and not much to look at. Earlier when they were cute, the cam wasn't straightened out yet.
