Heres the story,
theres this 20 year old arabian mare at the lesson barn i work at. Tuesday of this week she was brought in from the paddock and was bleeding all the way down her back legs and her tail was red(supposed ot be gray). We think she was in heat so we though maby she tried to itch herself on a tree and a branch cut her inside. (:-[poor girl) Well today i checked her and she still bleeding a little bit, it was sort of oozing now. But when the owner checked she said it wasn't a cut she just had her period. I have never seen a mare have her period I have seen the cloudy dishcarge they have when they are in heat. So my question is: Do mares bleed when they have their periods? Shes the only one who thinks so other people in the barn think we shoud call the vet.

That much blood, call the vet, I can see a little bit of staining, but not running down legs etc. Even after foaling that would cause me to call the vet. Fingers crossed everthing is okay for the mare.

Definitely call the vet. This is not normal.

I have not seen that much blood with a mare that was in constant heat every month for two years.

I think I would be concerned about this mare. I have seen my mares be messy on there backside but not bloody. I would also have a vet out to have her checked.

Hi Kayla, I presume that we are talking about Dominika's favorite horse, Twilight. Since I am no expert, since you showed me yesterday where babies come from, I suggest that we listen to these experienced folks. Twilight needs some good TLC & a vet check. Susan
